So, after reading some of the reviews, we initially decided to give this place a pass and eat somewhere else. But after striking out at another place, we decided to give it a shot. Sincerely glad that happened. We were immediately greeted when we walked in by our waiter, and the owner of the restaurant talked to us on our way to our table. Both went out of their way to make us feel welcome from the second we stepped through the door. Once we were sat down, our excellent waiter explained the menu and the sauces to us, and it was clear he was well versed in everything and had tried all of it. After explaining the sauces to us and telling us about each one, we weren't sure what we wanted to get, so he made up a little sample plate of each sauce, all labeled, and let us try all of them! As if that wasn't enough, we ended up with some ribs and chicken to try the different sauces on, compliments of the kitchen! After we ordered and got out food, the owner stopped by our table and chatted with us a bit. After finding out that we hadn't tried the smoked cabbage, he had a serving brought out to our table on the house for us to try. It was exquisite! I really can't stress enough that the service here was above and beyond in every aspect, from the moment we walked in to the time we left, every person in the building went out of their way to take care of us, they all went above and beyond. It was a real treat.
Now on to the food! We ordered pulled pork sandwiches, hot slaw, potato salad, smoked beans, and sweet potato. Compliments of the house, we also had smoked cabbage, ribs, and wings.
Pulled pork sandwich- generous portions(even though I ordered the small, it was huge!), exquisite meat with a wonderful flavor by itself, and cooked to tender perfection. My mouth is watering just remembering it while writing this review. The closest I could muster to a complaint was that the bun got a bit soggy by the end, from the juiciness of the meat.
Hot Slaw- very spicy, but wonderful flavors. I'm not a huge spicy food guy, but if you like it hot, give this a try! Sweet and savory, with a very sharp heat.
Sweet Potato- sweet, buttery, and wonderfully savory. Bit of a brown sugar taste, like a glaze. It was cooked perfectly. Good safe side if you're not feeling adventurous, but not disappointing in any way. Can't go wrong.
Potato Salad- not what I was expecting! When I saw it, I thought it was mashed potatoes until I tried it! Sweet and mild flavor, with an interesting spice blend. Again, a very generous portion size, and while it wasn't what I'm used to in a potato salad, it really hit the spot!
Smoked beans- staple food of any good barbecue joint, and perfect execution here. Big chunks of savory meat, wonderful sweet and smokey flavor. Probably the best beans I've ever had in a restaurant. Not overflowing with sauce, either, just the right amount in the serving.
Smoked Cabbage- I'm not sure how they cook it, but I want the recipe! It had a wonderful smokey sweet flavor, but it was still juicy and tender, not dried out at all. There were jalapeño rings in the cabbage, and they lent it a pleasant heat, but not too much. Next time I'm there, I'm definitely ordering it as a side!
Ribs- tender and juicy, cooked/smoked perfectly. They went excellently with the bourbon sauce and the hot barbecue. Well enough seasoned to eat without sauce, too.
Wings- I actually felt bad putting any sauce on the wings, they had so much flavor and seasoning as-is that it almost seemed like a shame to sauce them! Meat practically fell off the bones.
I know there's some negative reviews on here. Maybe they're from a bad night or something, but they were definitely not the case when we were there. The food was incredible, the portions were generous, the staff was beyond friendly and the service was so above and beyond that it was unreal. I'm in town for work for a few weeks, and I plan to stop by here for dinner every...
Read moreI went here this past weekend after hearing some good things about the place. After having been there, I am truly confused as to why..
I got a bbq sandwich, with baked beans and mac n' cheese. The meat by itself was extremely bland, with virtually no smoky flavor to it. It was also extremely moist, but not in a good way. It was so wet that it was dripping water off the sandwich whenever you would pick it up. I ate my baked beans first, and in the short time it took me to do that the bottom bun on the sandwich had already gotten soggy from the moist meat.
The macaroni and cheese was truly atrocious though. It looked seriously awful, and it had an odd taste to it like it was either bad.. or maybe they tried to use some fancy spice that just didn't work out. I thought I got a picture of it, but cannot find it on my phone..but it was brown-ish and just mashed up looking.
The baked beans were the only good thing I tried that day. That and the service being fairly decent are the only things that earn this place 2 stars. Another drawback for me is they do not offer free refills for sodas. You just get 1 can of soda and a cup. That may not be a big deal to some folks, but I normally like to enjoy quite a bit to drink whenever I go out and dine in. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if that was actually advertised anywhere on the menu, or mentioned to me by the server before they brought it out.
If you want BBQ and you're in Dayton, just go to MoMo's. They blow this place out...
Read moreHonestly the most unorganized restaurant I have ever watched. Instead of people having one duty and staying in their area they were running all over the place.
The food was probably some of the worst I have ever had. The brisket was more like boiled fatback. $12.99 for a large brisket sandwich that consisted of three skinny little slices of fat. The pulled pork didn't have any fat thankfully, but also it didn't have any flavor. It was the driest pork I have ever eaten. I saw them shaking seasonings on the meat, somebody needs to tell them put it on before they cook it. It was supposed to be a barbecue restaurant but I think both the beef brisket and the pork were boiled. It was that flavorless. The smoked cabbage had so much sugar in it it was inedible. It was definitely not smoked either. On a side-note the macaroni and cheese was good.
We spent $28.34. what a waste of money. This was a to-go order. If we had been sitting inside eating they would have taken it back to...
