Update: Cut down my review to address the owner's (previous) very untruthful response. Main points:
After my first visit here I gave this place 5 stars. By today..
First, cleanliness. -1
The tables are usually sticky and/or covered in crumbs.
The first time this happened I asked the employee if she could wipe the table. She kindly agreed but did it in like 2 seconds and half of the table was untouched. I went to my car to get my wipes, and now I just bring them with me every time to wipe down my area. The past 4/5 times I've been here, both my table and the tables to my right and left were dirty. The benches also had crumbs on them twice. I'm not a clean freak. I do the bare minimum. These tables are below that.
I realize it's difficult to constantly wipe down tables every time a customer leaves, but this goes beyond that if it's happening frequently.
Second, customer care. -3
I've been going to coffee shops for years to study. I like the background chatter and it helps me stay energized. However, after I discovered this place I started going here because it's only a few minutes away from my house.
Recently, I've been bumping into a customer & his friends. Every time, this customer's voice is so loud that it's all I can hear in the room and even my headphones won't help. By today I realized that I either try to to talk to him or I stop coming here. As he was leaving, I asked him if we could speak and we had a friendly conversation about it - he even knew what I was gonna say, asking me if it was because of his voice. He shared that his friends tell him he has a tendency to speak loudly. He expressed appreciation for telling him and told me he's gonna attempt to speak at a lower volume. I also related to him about my own loud voice and how I understand it happens.
I was happy with the outcome, and then before I left, the employee / owner's daughter came up to me, in front of my friends, to pass along a message from her dad.
TLDR; the customer knows her dad and told him what happened, and her dad wanted me to know that the customer is a regular who's been coming here long, and they're not going to bother him and neither can I, and made comments like "this isn't a library."
By the end of our convo I was dumbfounded. I told her that it would be too loud for me to come back and she said okay. At no point did she even fake empathy.
What is it? Money? The customer can dominate the entire room because he brings himself and a group of friends? Or is it a loyalty thing? I understand perks like faster service, being waited, occasional freebies, etc, but entitlement to be the loudest person at the cost of other customers? Personally, I would not let even my family upset my customers bc we're related and they bring me income.
Worst of all... As me and my friends left, the owner came after us with chocolate bars. I was actually shocked he wasn't embarrassed to do that. I continued to my car.
I might have even been understanding if they approached this differently. Bad economy. Hard times. You wanna secure a loyal customer, not someone who's only been here for a few months. I get it (sort of). But it did not have to be so dismissive. That my discomfort didn't matter because he's a regular and I'm not. They could have acknowledged my issue but shared that they're in a pickle because he's a regular customer. I would have understood. I still would not have come back, but I wouldn't be leaving a 1 star review. Why does it matter though, the only people seeing his reviews are new...
Read moreI stumbled upon City Coffeehouse on a brief visit home. I wish I did live here because it would be my go to coffee shop!
The prices were reasonable, lots of seasonal variety and options to choose from, and great service from staff. I ordered the caprese sandwich which was great, but wish I’d paid more attention to the menu and chose the cheese croissant. However, I really enjoyed my order which included the Spanish latte! Both were one of the best I’ve had in a while!
I chose the latte at the recommendation of the baristas while looking for something “not too sweet” on the seasonal menu. Excellent choice! I really appreciate the ambience and would have loved to been able to stick around and work or...
Read moreHaving been familiar with City Coffeehouse in downtown Allen Park, I decided to try their new Dearborn Heights location today, and I'm glad I did. The place is clean, aesthetically pleasing, and the staff is very friendly. I honestly thought the place would be a bit sparse for a weekday mid-morning, but I was wrong. There was a decidedly younger crowd on their laptops, having meetings, etc. I went with my go-to drink - an iced coffee - and it was served promptly. I also met Ahmad, the owner, who welcomed me and was happy I checked the place out. I will definitely continue to support this small business and I encourage others to...
