Soooo, I tried a new BBQ restaurant in Mason yesterday based on a recommendation. It is called Mission BBQ. A group of us went. I did not stay, but took my food to go. The comments from the 6 people who stayed were as follows: “The food was delicious, especially the collard greens, baked beans, mac and cheese. All meats were tender especially the brisket. We recommend the Memphis belle, smoky mountain, and Texas twang for sauces. The staff was very friendly, the restaurant was extremely clean and we highly recommend this restaurant.” Now on to my thoughts…
Yes, I agree the restaurant is clean and the staff is very friendly. With regard to the food, I got the baby back ribs, the half chicken, collard greens, green beans, mac and cheese, smashed potatoes, potato salad, peach cobbler, and cornbread. Before you say anything, NO, all that food was not just for me. There are 10 sauces on the menu and I tried them all. They ranged from sweet to very spicy. I have to say, I don’t believe there is a need for 10 sauces. The focus should just be on a few good sauces. I do agree on the 3 sauces mentioned before, with the smoky mountain being my favorite followed by the Texas twang. The meat was very tender. I felt the chicken was juicy, but was perhaps over seasoned as well (TRUST-you won’t hear me saying something is over seasoned a lot). There appeared to be an overall spiciness throughout the meal. Not just the chicken due to all the seasoning, but also the greens and even the potato salad. The sweet cornbread (possibly Jiffy) was really good, but I ain’t mad at ‘em if it is Jiffy. Though one young person said, “it’s not cornbread, it’s cake.” And again, I ain’t mad at ‘em. Although I did not eat the peach cobbler, it was felt that the peaches were canned, but despite that, the peach cobbler was thoroughly enjoyed. All in all, the food was good. Would I need to make another special trip out there just for it, probably not. But if you just happen to be in the area and you’re looking for some...
Read more[Edited for clarity] First and foremost, owner is clearly a Vet or very Vet friendly. Decor is military friendly. Which is 100% A-OK. Its tasteful and pretty cool. Its an observation worthy of sharing.
Menu selection is about what you expect from a BBQ joint. A selections of meets and sides. Plates, sandwiches, and combos.
BBQ sauce selections were good, and tasty. I've had others that were better (knock your socks off memorable good). That said, Mission BBQ as a solid selection.
Food quality, temp, and preparation? Tasty it was quite good. then again BBQ is a little hard to mess up. I certainly meets any expectations anyone coming to a BBQ joint would have.
Portions - I thought they were a bit small. I don't need or want a GIANT meal, but it seemed small for the price. Its first time in Cincy, so I had not local comparison for price/portion.
Beer selection, maybe it's temporary, but it was very poor. Michelob Ultra and Yeungling was it. Wall mentioned craft beers, but during my visit there were none. What goes great with good BBQ? a great cold brew. Suggestion - bring in some other selections.
Very Friendly staff.
Pros: good tasting food comfortable surroundings family/kid friendly
Cons: poor beer selection a little pricey for the portion sizes coleslaw was quite disappointing
First time in Cincy area. If I'm ever back to area would I good again? Maybe. I would probably try another BBQ just to have different experience to compare.
Mission BBQ was good, it was not bad at all. Though it was not so GREAT that would cause me to skip exploring other establishments.
If in the area, sure try it. I would even recommend to other if they were in the immediate area. If you live in the area, perhaps there are other options to explore before coming back to Mission BBQ.
Overall, still...
Read moreLOVE Mission BBQ!! Love their basic premise of honoring our military and first responders. I'm not either, but I Love that they (and we) can celebrate those awesome folks. The food is really, really good and quantities are really large, so plan to split some items or take some home with you, especially if you choose the 2 or 3 meat plates. With the brisket, you can choose lean or fatty and don't pass up the jalapeno sausage. It isn't terribly spicy hot, so you can spicy it up more with the Nashville hot sauce. Sausage isn't usually my go to for BBQ, but every time I taste it here, I'm glad to have some. 😉 We finally had some of the caramel bread pudding and OMG!!! it is fantastic. Unfortunately, it's seasonal, but something to look forward to when the skies start to turn grey again next fall here in Cincy.
If you're coming for lunch, be sure to get here before noon, when the entire restaurant stops and sings the National Anthem. So much love for our patriots.
And the staff here are ALL awesome. Everyone has a smile and the front end staff circulate frequently to help refill drinks or clean off plates. I've never had a bad experience here nor spoken to...
