Ugh, can't even begin to describe the horrible experience we had with Candy Haven. I will start with the only pro: the cake tasted good - but how hard is it to mess up cake, right? I am an amateur cake maker due to the Wilton Level 1 Class I took at Hobby Lobby 9 years ago, so I can make a cake but I don't make a great cake. I was co-hosting a very special baby shower for a friend and my co-host wanted to use Candy Haven. I too have experienced nothing but rude people there, I had used them twice over the 15 years in Denton and every time swear never again. Ha! This 3rd time was not the charm. Anyways, we requested a very simple cake. A double layer square cake with grass along the bottom, white icing, white scallops along the top and writing. Truth: we dropped off a sketching of the cake and requested the writing be on the bottom half of the cake so that we could add a "clothesline". When we picked up the cake the writing was obscured by the scallop border. I was unhappy but took the cake anyway. We got home, took the cake out of the box and realized the writing wasn't the only problem. The cake wasn't a true square, the sides were slanted, the icing between the layers had squeezed out all around so there was a band of icing protruding around the whole cake, and the green grass icing looked like browning avocado. I wanted to cry. We kept saying over and over again, "It looks like a Walmart cake." One of the co-hosts called Candy Haven and spoke to a manager saying we were unhappy with the cake and manager said we should have mentioned something in the store because most problems can be fixed and that we were more than welcome to send her an email with our concerns. After hanging up the phone we decided to take the cake back in and see what they could fix. The writing being obscured was just too much to be ignored. We took the cake in and spoke with the same manager, a female, and I couldn't believe her reaction to our complaints! She denied there was anything wrong with the cake! Here were her responses: Only "dummy" cakes are completely square. It is summer, all icing squishes out the sides due to the heat The writing looked fine to her. She could make us another cake to be picked up the next day. Obviously she knew that was an empty offer.
The woman was so defensive that at one point I tried to reach across the counter to touch her and say, "it's okay... calm down." I didn't even mention the grass.
So, I asked for my folder back with all my drawings and sample pictures, yes I printed off pictures, that I had dropped off and once she saw all the work I had done to make sure the decorator knew what I wanted, (she literally said to me, "Oh, you wanted your cake to look exactly like this?") she agreed to fix the writing.
So we go home and add on our adorable stand up clothesline and the cake is good enough. Later my husband sees the cake and immediately notices and comments on all the problems with it and says "But what did you pay for it? Twenty bucks?" I blurted out, "No! $65!" He says, "$65 for a Walmart cake!"
I explained to him it was Candy Haven and he immediately expressed his opinion that we certainly all agreed with: Inexcusable and to never, ever use them again. Next time someone says they want a Candy Haven cake I am going to put my foot down and say that my money will never be spent towards anything at their shop ever again.
PS: When I was in there ordering the cake I decided to ask about cupcakes for my son's birthday. I was making him a tiered dinosaur train cake but also wanted superhero cupcakes with various colors of icing and I didn't think I would have to time to dye 4 different colors, once again I added the decor myself I just wanted the cupcakes and icing done for me. They quoted me a price of $50 for one dozen cupcakes! I said, no thank you and went to Kroger. For $6.99 they made me the most...
Read moreCandy Haven & Cakes is a local treasure. Known for their incredible cakes, cookies, and sweets, this shop is a go-to spot for celebrating lifeâs moments, big and small. The staff are so friendly, the shop is spotless, and the scent of fresh baked goods is absolutely irresistible.
Picture this: Mitch a grown bearded man dressed as a fairy, wearing a pink tutu, feathered cuffs, tights, ruffled bloomers, and a flower in his hair, prancing into the shop like he was auditioning for a very strange ballet. (he lost a bet) The staff at Candy Haven didnât just tolerate this ridiculousnessâthey embraced it wholeheartedly. They laughed with (and definitely at) Mitch as he struck poses, twirled at the slightest mention of the word âtutu,â and sashayed around like it was his lifeâs calling.
The staff had so much fun with Mitchâs ridiculous performance that they joked about wanting âthe fairyâ to come back again. (Just let us know and Mitch will be there LOL)
They even mentioned how much theyâd love to share the photos and videos online, ensuring Mitchâs public spectacle would live on far beyond this one afternoon. I hope they do!!
Letâs just say he might have leaned into the fairy persona a little too much and enjoyed every minute!
And while Mitchâs dignity evaporated that day, the baked goods remained flawless. From the delicious cookies to the perfectly moist cakes, everything here is top-tier. Candy Haven & Cakes doesnât just serve amazing dessertsâthey create memories that are as sweet (and sometimes as mortifying) as their treats. If youâre looking for incredible customer service and the best desserts in Denton, this is your spot. And if youâre lucky, you might even catch âMitch the fairy ballerinaâ in action again. Highly...
Read moreFirst let me say that I a rewriting my review. When we met with Ashley she made all our dreams come true. She understood the direction we were going in and saw our vision and made it come to life. I called her 3 weeks prior to my wedding and she was still very lovely to deal with. Now the bad part. On the day of my wedding they were supposed to be there at 10. Around 10:30 my hubby to be calls them and says that she will be there shortly and that we are her first stop. Around 10:45 she finally shows up, which isn't a big deal but I was a little frustrated. When I go down to view the cake once it was all set up, my heart dropped. The cake was not right at all. The color of the actual cake was wrong, my monogram was made out of icing instead of fondant which is what I paid for, and overall the cake looked thrown together last minute. My maid of honor called and talked to the owner and the owner was TOTALLY RUDE and screamed at my maid of honor. My maid of honor was not the same the rest of the day. Finally the owner Jane calls me and tries to apologize for her actions, and says she wants to "fix" the cake with sending out a fondant O which was what we were supposed to have in the first place. She says well its been a stressful day for us, we had to reroute trucks to get you your cake on time. I'm sorry but on the day of my wedding I don't care how stressed you are, you just delivered my cake that I paid $500 for and it's wrong and it was a sad poor excuse for a cake. Overall I will NEVER use them again, and as far as brides looking to book them, DON'T waste your time. Your wedding day should be great and your cake should be everything you wanted and paid for. It shouldn't be spent in the bathroom crying over a cake...
