Fantastic food but the fast casual, half-service format is not working. Too few tables, almost never one available, you have to hover like a hawk over tables to snatch one up the moment people get up. This creates a competitive and sometimes hostile dining environment, and it’s annoying when you’re trying to eat and people are staring you down waiting for you to finish. They really need to switch to a full service format with a host that manages tables.
The wait times for food are quite long and the cashier will tell you that, but you won’t know that until after waiting in line 20 minutes. Again, they really need to have a host.
The parking situation is so bad that I don’t dine here so much as attempt to dine here, with more than a few abandoned attempts. Too much stress and hassle for a damn taco. It’s not really something the restaurant has much control of but newbies be warned.
The food is more than great though, worth the trouble, and unlike other reviews here I’ve found the food to be always flavorful, always piping hot on arrival (texture indicates fresh from the griddle, no heat lamps or anything devious). Others have complained about small protein portions but every single visit I find them to be quite generous with the protein. And I’m a 260lb guy, that’s something I pay attention to. I will say the prices are shocking despite how good the food is. That’s not really a complaint from me personally but first time visitors should be be prepared for sticker shock.
The service at the bar is great, bartenders are awesome and attentive, good conversationalists. The place is overall well maintained, bright and clean, and apart from the gladiator spectacle that is trying to get a table, it’s a cozy spot.
There’s a lot to like. If they could just commit to a better serving format they’d be the...
Read moreAnother trendy, overpriced, inauthentic instagram hype joint in another tragically gentrified neighborhood. Ordered: 4 birria tacos w/consome, 1 paparrito, 1 bottled drink and 1 fountain drink. Total: $54!!! $60ish after tip. I don’t care how much money you make, this is just an unwise use of that money. As you can see on the receipt, $3.75 for a smearing of guacamole?!? That’s just stupid. Birria is rich and flavorful meat dipped in an equally delicious broth, these tacos and burrito alone had close to no flavor. How does that even happen? The consome did have good flavor but not nearly as strong as it should have been. $7 for a 16oz agua de piña that you’re told you can only have one refill of. $4 for a Jarrito that costs $1.50 at the corner store. Honestly, overall the food is okay. Cut the price in half and it makes sense, and the thing is you can find that kind of deal all along 38th at the many remaining authentic Mexican restaurants that have been there for decades. I really wanted to like Kike’s but all things considered it’s just plain out a poor decision if you want good food at a reasonable price. And notice I say reasonable, I’m not trying to compare this to some rundown taco truck. If you came across this on social media, don’t believe the hype. If you want dump some money for a few cool pics on your story, hit it up. Service was friendly and concise, but really your only interactions are when you order and when the runner brings you your food. There is no technical...
Read moreI have been on the hunt for the best birria tacos in the Denver Metro. I have tried probably 6-7 places and Kike's is by far the best I have had yet.
We ordered the Quesa Birria Tacos with Consume and also got agua frescas and the trio dip with guac, salsa, and queso. Everything was delicious. My hibiscus agua fresca was perfect and they even have the GOOD ice. Also, the drinks are a little pricey so be sure to get your free refill before leaving.
We went on a Friday night at about 6:30 and there was no parking. The lot is tiny for how popular this restaurant is. We drove around the block and found street parking. Once inside, the line was to the door but it moved quickly. Seating is limited and we almost thought we weren't going to get a table-- you order at the counter, they give you a number tent and then they find you at a table of your choosing. The guy at the counter said food time was about 30 minutes so we should be able to get a table. And, we did, but this can be slightly stressful when the place is packed and there are other groups waiting on tables too.
Food came out in 30ish minutes and was hot and delicious. I felt the servings were adequate for the price and that it was well worth finding a parking place and waiting...
