This is a review of a recent take-out experience and does not speak about the dine-in service or food. On March 27th, I had placed an order through Beyondmenu.com and was having it delivered to the hotel my family and I were staying at in DTC. Once I had completed my order and was checking out, the delivery option was no longer available. I assumed the delivery had been cut off with the restaurant closing within an hour or so. I placed the order for pick up since it was getting late and the restaurant was only 5-10 minutes away. When I arrived, the restaurant didn't have my order. I showed them my order confirmation and they showed that my order didn't come through. This appeared to be an issue with the 3rd party site which I advised could have been an isolated issue and they may want to look into it. The reception was very friendly and eager to place my order instantly. I provided my order which was ready in about 10 minutes. Even with the ordering issues, everything up to this point was fine. My order consisted of salmon sashimi, scallop nigiri, a salmon skin roll, a spicy tuna roll, teriyaki chicken, and yakisoba. The yakisoba ended up being the only thing that was slightly edible while having a very odd flavor. There didn't seem to be anything consistent with what we would normally see in yakisoba such as oyster sauce, common spices, etc. The salmon sashimi was chewy and had a strange bitterness to it instead of the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture that I am accustomed to. It also had the appearance that it was taken, without care, from the second cut and not from the top loin, where sashimi is commonly cut from. The salmon skin was soggy and had a rancid taste to it. The chicken used in the teriyaki had a chewy, freezer-burned texture to it. It also had a strange inconsistent breading to it, almost like it originally had a katsu coating that had been scraped off. Except for a few bites of the yakisoba and just tastes of the rest, we had to toss it all. We called the restaurant to let them know of the issues and were advised the manager would call us back. The manager called back within a couple of minutes, which I appreciated. I relayed all of the issues we had and she asked if she could pick up the food and refund us in person. I told her that she didn't need to do that and that we were not looking for a refund. We simply wanted to make her aware of the problems we had with the food. After she kept asking if she could pick up the food and refund us, I said that she could if she wanted to. The manager then proposed that she would relay the information to the cooks, not worry about picking up the food, and credit 50% of our bill back to us. I said that was fine. I provided my credit card number to her at her request and she said she would get it processed. The restaurant has since processed the charge in full. I wasn't expecting a $300 chef's sushi sitting, but I did expect something edible, even for a strip mall sushi place. With all of the 5-star reviews and pictures of food that didn't represent what we received, I am hopeful that this was a one-off incident that we, unfortunately, were the victims of. I want to make it clear that I am not speaking against the positive reviews and again, felt the service at the restaurant was great. With all the options out there, I probably wouldn't visit again and will say that it is disappointing that the restaurant chose to charge us in full when we were told there would be a credit. I feel that speaks a little bit to the integrity of the...
Read moreBased on the reviews, I expected decent to good-tasting sushi. What was delivered to our group was disappointing, with the Kobe Beef roll being the exception (a type of roll I usually don’t order, but was happy I did this one time because it, unlike the other rolls, tasted excellent- highly recommend). The salmon, halibut, yellowtail, and even the spicy scallop hand rolls were a bit mushy, and worse, distinctly fishy in taste and even smell. I’ve eaten sushi a few times a week for the last 10+ years across the US and well beyond, yet i have rarely been surprised with low quality or bad fish. This was one of those rare times, and I wish I had ordered from Sonadas or even Blue Sake. Maybe the fact it was delivered vs. consumed in-house could account for the discrepancy in our experience vs. the other reviewers, but in the end we were so disappointed in what we got, most of which we tossed. Also, the usual accoutrements like wasabi, ginger, and sauces were available for purchase, except for soy sauce, which did not appear as a menu item one could request. I therefore assumed it would just be included, but there was no...
Read moreThis is decent sushi, not great sushi. The fish is very fresh, which is the most important thing, but the portions are just too big for good table manners (a very important concept for the Japanese table). Sushi and Sashimi are supposed to be consumed in one bite. These rolls and nigiri are HUGE two bite monsters that basically leave you making a mess all over your plate. The nigiri were poorly made, with fish that was too big and ridiculously small portions of rice that were like hard pucks. They could easily split the fish portion into two with a proportional amount of rice (like it's supposed to be), and serve two pieces of nigiri per order for near the same price. This would make a much more pleasant eating experience. I also had the "octopus" nigiri (again, way too big), and I put octopus in quotes because honestly, I think it was fake. It did not have the right texture for fresh octopus and the taste was a little weird (fresh, but not like octopus). If I come here again, I'll stick with the regular sized rolls...
