I always love this place for their $7.00 NY style rye bread. I give it four stars for reputation and past experience but... is there no such thing as good service anymore? I came a long way for a sick friend who wanted matzo ball soup from the Bagel Deli down the street. But bizarrely, they didn't open until like 5:00pm or something, I think this was Saturday? Anyway, the kid at the register took my "to go" order of "three large matzo ball soups and a rye bread". Simple enough, right? He asks if I want rye bread or Saltines. Hmmm, I asked for three soups and a rye bread. I pay and five minutes later he brings me a box and I'm walking out the door when I notice the "loaf" of rye bread was actually like six slices. I saw that he was the one to prepare my order. I asked if this was a full loaf and he said yes. I pull it out of the box and said no it's not and he realized I wanted a full loaf. He had been referring to what they give you with the soup (Saltines or two slices of bread). So he rang me up another seven bucks and I waited a few more minutes. No "I'm sorry", no nervous chatter. I guess it didn't thrill him, the phone kept ringing. No big deal either except it occured to me that in this Plagued environment, service should be exceptional. This kid had a preconceived notion that clouded his ability to understand my very simple request. Had I been more alert myself, I would have asked for Saltines. I was already getting a full loaf of bread. And I think most people, including my shiksa friend, would prefer crackers to bread. She's feeling better now but I visited her last night and noticed six slices of this awesome bread untouched, sitting on her table, destined for the garbage. Because you non-New Yorkers don't know these are little slices of heaven. Have an open mind, think outside your own box, and go outta your way to give EXCEPTIONAL service these days. If he woulda at least acknowledged his mistake... and at that point maybe I woulda thought to ask for crackers... Or am I just difficult? Four stars.
FOLLOW UP: Of course I'll return. I love this place. Five stars every other time. I was in a foul mood when I wrote that, sorry. If only my friend's husband could've come from Ljttleton for this Matzo Ball Medicine Soup for his sick wife. But it's the same everywhere... service is horrible just about everywhere. Is it not important anymore? The generation? Is it...
Read moreThis is by far the worst place I have ever been. Talk about obnoxious owners. They never admit fault. I agree with Elizabeth who wrote a review about how nasty these people are. These owners brag that their food is trucked in from NY. No wonder the bacon is fatty and tough. Why would you buy beef from NY when there is the best beef right her in CO? Shows you the mentality of these owners. I go by this place quite a bit in my daily travels and I do mean I go right on by. These owners discriminate against all minorities and just people in general. They are rude and arrogant. My friend and I wanted to sit in a booth in front but we weren't allowed because we didn't fit the image of the nasty woman owner. And I do mean nasty and ugly. We got the same rude treatment from this woman owner as Elizabeth did when she complained about her glass of water. This woman owner took us to the furthest table in the back of the restaurant where we couldn't be seen or heard and the restaurant wasn't even half full. I'm sure Elizabeth didn't fit the image of the nasty, ugly woman owner, so the owner refused to comp the meal. I obviously don't know the full cost of the meal but it was worth it to the nasty, ugly woman owner to lose a customer? I know she lost two customers when my friend and I walked out. So that is 3 customers in one day the owner lost. And the owners post photos of all types of celebrities who supposedly ate there. When was the last time anyone saw anyone of star status there besides the owners who think they are star status? Do you think Elway from Elways would dine at this dive instead of his own fancy restaurant in Cherry Creek? Really, it's time these owners had a reality check. And in my daily travels past this dive I do notice there are less and less patrons in the parking lot. I also notice they are advertising for help. Could it be the help has realized they can do better elsewhere and have considerate bosses and owners? I hope so. these owners should go back to NY but they wouldn't...
Read moreOkay so, I worked in food service my whole life and I have nothing but the utmost respect for waitresses. However,. Yesterday I went to New York deli news and when the waitress came and took our order I asked her for a club sandwich with pastrami and cheese instead of Turkey. She immediately started to fight me on my order and said well why don't I just give you a pastrami sandwich with lettuce and tomato? And I said okay but can you make it like a club? And she was like not really because it's not on our menu. (On their menu there is a build-your-own sandwich option so I don't know why this was such an impossible request) when I asked for cheese, my spouse had said they didn't want cheese on their sandwich so she then looked at me and said I'll give you the cheese that's supposed to be on his sandwich and put it on yours so there's no extra charge. Which I thought was kind of nice. But then I order comes out and I literally just have a giant pastrami sandwich with lettuce and tomato, not in the form of a club ( layers) and the cheese was literally three slices of cheese on a separate plate and not on my sandwich. it couldn't have been farther from my actual order and I literally giggled when she give me my order. However I ate my sandwich anyway because maybe it was me that had confused her. so we eat our meals she hardly checks on us throughout the meal there's literally two other families in the whole restaurant. We're ready to leave and it takes like 20 minutes of us just sitting there waiting for her to come back and she never does. Finally we just get up and go up to the front register on our own and request check out receipt. As we're walking past the back kitchen I literally see her leaning on a counter on her cell phone. she doesn't even notice that were walking right past her to go pay for our own meal. We paid for our entire meal and left and she never even notice we were gone. I love New York deli news and I've never received that kind of service...
