Just finished the Sunday Supper as a birthday celebration and I would absolutely do so again. Love the concept, and the meal as a whole was very bright and seasonal, with some standout courses, and service was friendly, if a bit slow. I love being able to have a tasting menu with no meat or dairy, and hope for more of this, so my small critiques are with love and with plans to come back. Doing a new improvised menu each week is a huge task and they do it really well.
The 5+ star experience for us, unexpectedly, was the cocktails. Everything we got, on menu or off the spirits list, was perfectly balanced. I would come here for small bites and cocktails any time.
The meal was also great. Started out strong with a bread and salsa verde (tasted more like chimichurri) that I wanted more of. This should be a regular menu item. Then we had an amazing pea shoot salad. The next course was Swiss chard with tahini and a guajillo potato salad. Both were great, the chard was exceptional. Seemed to be the crowd favorite. After that, the main course, which took a while to arrive, was a letdown. We got an over-salted, very unimaginative rigatoni with tomato and basil. On its own, if I were hungry, it would have been fine, but after such a vibrant first two courses it was very jarring and a bit bland. Also, very salty. Would have been appropriate as a second course in a winter menu but was overpowering in context.
This is me judging all their hard work after the fact, but if I were to make my perfect meal out of the great experience I had, I would have gone with a brighter, more herbaceous potato salad in course 2 and used the creamy, smoky, earthy guajillo sauce with the rigatoni and basil for the main course. Our server mentioned that the 4 chefs come up with the 4 courses, and I think that the flow between the courses is the last thing they can fully dial in to take the supper to the next level, maybe borrow each other's ideas and shuffle around. Anyways it was still great, but the main course was the glaring weak spot.
We finished with a crazy-good raspberry vanilla cake. It saved the meal after the rigatoni. Like other reviewers I noticed other tables got a champagne glass that we didn't even though we noted we were celebrating a special occasion. I was truthfully a bit disappointed by this and left me feeling a bit sad, but it was still overall a great experience, and a rarity among totally vegan restaurants to feel like a special...
Read moreWent for a bday dinner, would not return. I made a 12 person reservation a few weeks prior so the restaurant had lots of time to prepare
I called on 3 separate occasions to confirm dietary restrictions, the reservation amount, etc. and was told that they could accommodate 2 GF people and 1 person who is unable to eat spicy food due to GI issues. We were even asked a third time to confirm any dietary restrictions by the first server who appeared before the first meal. Despite this, they still brought out spicy cabbage- triggering a GI issue later in the evening.
We also waited super long between all meals/drinks. At one point we’d been there so long 2 people ended up having to pay early and leave. The servers did not come back at all except to serve the meals and then did not stay to take any additional drink orders. At one point a couple people tried to get more drinks ordered while the servers were present and the servers ended up walking away not hearing us.
Although 3 of us opted for the wine pairings, none of us got our wine pairings with the correct meals. At one point they just forgot the third persons pairing all together and I had to ask two separate times to multiple people about where her pairing was. It ended up coming about 20ish mins later with the incorrect meal. About halfway through we were served two separate wine pairings at the same time because the bartender was unable to keep up. This was extremely disappointing as the whole point of wine pairing is that it’s supposed to correlate to each meal, and the wine pairing wasn't cheap.
When the bill was brought out, we were incorrectly billed for too many people as 2 people had already paid earlier as they had to leave, one person did not order food at all and one additional person who was supposed to attend didn’t. Incorrect billing isn’t that big of a deal but when combined with all the other issues it was problematic.
I can’t help but feeling like because we were auto tipped (which is to be expected as we were a large group) there was a general lack of care about service. When you drop almost a $1000 for a special event dinner and give a decent amount of notice to the restaurant, the service should be better than what was provided to us.
I emailed the restaurant the day after to notify them and they responded saying they were sorry and will email me again to figure out how to make up for it. They never bothered to...
Read moreFirst of all, the service is great. The staff is welcoming and pleasant. There is always something I love and last night's Sunday supper 5-course meal was no exception. I have to say that I wasn’t a fan of the spaghetti aglie e olio. It was just okay. The squash medley was pretty flavorful and amazing, and I don't even like squash that much. I believe it had like a pistachio cream on top, but I'm not sure what the server said due to the loudness of the room. The farro and cannellini soup was very good, but the true star of the show was the scoop of black sesame chai ice cream on top of this sesame seed cracker bowl thing which really was the best part of the entire meal, and I don't even love chai!
This restaurant is small and you won't have any problem finding your party if you're late walking in. The ambience is eclectic, upbeat and lively with subdued lighting and somewhat of a cramped feeling. In my opinion, the tables are too close together, especially the ones by the north window of the main room. Leave your puffy oversized garb at home. It's off-putting to have, at minimum, your dress graze the table next to you as you're scooting by to go use the restroom. Social distancing is definitely out the door here. Although I love the fun mostly dance music they play, I wish it was a tad turned down. Unless you're a naturally boisterous extrovert, it's definitely not a good place for romantic dining and great conversation. There is a bar as you walk into the restaurant, and we have eaten at the bar once when there was too long of a wait for the main room. Also, as a small aside, parking can be a challenge. The main entrance to the restaurant is very unassuming and is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. It's in an odd location facing Broadway and there's nothing else around that area in terms of night life. Wish it was situated somewhere more central to everything.
Somebody People is hit and miss with the menu always changing. For instance, I’ve had the lemon meringue which was really amazing, and I don't even love lemony types of desserts, but they don’t have it on the menu anymore. But I get that they draw up their menu based on what's in season and whatnot. I will definitely be back to try something else - just not in a...
