I've been here a couple times for lunch and I wish I could give a higher rating since it's a cute eatery that evokes a nostalgia of those good old days of simple pleasures...when a milkshake and hot dog at a booth or umbrella table with family and friends was a cure for a bad day or just a time to be happy and carefree. The folks at the counter seemed authentic, no-nonsense but a little too close to taciturn as opposed to tactful. I chalk it up to rough edges around probable good hearts. The hot dogs...not plump and juicy as I'd hoped and a little wrinkly. Plus, I didn't see any spicy brown mustard out at the condiment stand (that may have to be requested, so I won't factor that into my review). I like the idea of the crinkle cut fries, but curly fries would be neat as an option, too. I haven't tried their ice cream or any other frozen treats yet so I can see an updated review in the future. The ice cream freezer isn't in the best area; it's off to the right as you walk in, so you will likely contend with a line of families with small children trying to solve pressing issues as to flavors and sizes and such. It would have made more sense to have the ice cream displayed toward the front so that you are facing it as you walk in. It's just a little awkward and adds some unnecessary mayhem to the wait if it's busy. I am going to visit again, order something else, and get a milkshake and see how it goes. It's a very convenient eatery that is community-minded, with satisfactory menu options. I just believe though, that if hot dogs are one of your staple food items, they should be of the best quality. The hot dogs here are a little too close to the ones you can get at a school or hospital cafeteria in terms of freshness. Not too bad on flavor, but who wants to pay for a dog that looks like it's seen...
Read moreStopped into Denville Dog and Grill and tried out a few dogs. Got one with red onions and mustard and I also got the "Denville Dog" which had Chili, Cheese sauce, Sauerkraut, Diced Onion, and relish. Figured since they had a branded dog that it would be their best item and I should try that out. The woman who helped me at the counter was very friendly and she showed me to the restroom in what was an otherwise closed interior to the business (ample seating outside though).
The buns for the dogs were generic which is typically expected but they were not steamed toasted and had that "just beginning to stale" kind of feel to them. That doesn't really usually bother me much honestly, but worth mentioning. The red onions had a flavor similar to the jarred Sabrett's onions but they were not uniformly chopped which led me to believe they made them in house. The flavor was quite similar to Sabretts though. Dogs were sabretts but they were not the naturally cased "snappy" dogs.
The Denville dog unfortunately just had too much going on for me. I'm willing to bet if I had just gotten chili, cheese, onion (which is a typical combo for me) I would have liked it more. There were a lot of flavors competing and it didn't come together for me.
Prices were pretty good, the two dogs were somewhere around $7 and change if I remember correctly. Denville Dogs and Grill Didn't Suck, but with a lot of other options in North Jersey that I prefer, I'm not sure that I'll be back.

Read morePretty good! I will right off the bat say the only reason I removed a star is this place suffers from "over seasoned syndrome" the classic trope of if you just pour a bucket of salt and pepper on everything it "taste better"
What we got was 2 Chili Cheese and Onion dogs, and a Philly Cheese Steak. The Philly was very fresh and delicious, the bread was fresh as well. The con, as said before was it was absolutely coated in pepper. Completely unnecessary as the flavor and freshness was fine! The fries we got as sides despite asking for no salt on them had salt on them! But they were very fresh and cooked good. Here is the biggest con. The chili dogs.... Inedible. I dont know why they decided to make the chilidogs with an unholy amount of spice. Unlike traditional chilidogs that have a sweet chili or a "meat sauce" these had chili so spicy that even my SO would not eat it, and she likes to eat peppers as a snack! For 3.50+ a dog Its a shame they had to be thrown away.
We got some icecream too and the soft serve twist was a 7/10 the chocolate was rich and creamy but the vanilla was rather almost watery. It melted way faster than the choclate and was not rich or creamy, meanwhile the chocolate stayed solid and was rich in flavor.
Overall I rate Denville Dog a...
