Al's Fresh Fish & Chicken — Restaurant in Detroit

I came here today for the first time based off of recommendations from someone at the meat market on Gratiot. I looked at the reviews before walking in and they seemed fine. The wait wasn't long. The staff was very friendly. I ordered a 15pc shrimp with fries. Everything looked fine before I walked out. You can see in the picture it looks like your average fried shrimp order.. Upon tasting it though, there was a terrible fish taste from the shrimp and the fries. Like the grease was bad or something. It was such a gross, strong taste that I had to pull over on the Lodge Freeway to throw up on the way home, and then again when I got home. I did call to let them know how bad order was. They offered to replace it or a discount for my next visit, but I declined. Not just because I stay on the other side of town, but the taste was just so absolutely horrendous, that I just don't want to try it again. I do not recommend this...

I wanted to find a black owned restaurant to support because black business is important. I was excited to find Al’s and order delivery. I ordered the 3 piece whiting and other things. While the food arrived quickly and hot, it was inedible, previously frozen, over fried garbage. I am so disappointed. Where I’m from the art of preparing fresh fried fish is sacred to the black community—especially whiting. Good fried whiting has a crispy and flavorful outside, with a light, and flakey melt-in-your-mouth inside that can inspire satisfaction and joy. There was no joy in the fish I received. Only rubbery, stale, crunchy old, grease flavored dispare. While it pains me to poorly review a business run by my people...please don’t make the mistake I made and order food from Al’s. I wish you all real culinary growth and access to an affordable supply line...

I guess if your only gonna have fish cooked by them, your good, but if your buying fresh fish being weighed by the pound FORGET ABOUT IT! They are super lazy and DONT clean their fish when being fileted. We bought $70 worth of fish and had to re-clean it so we wouldn't eat scales! Would never recommend nor go back!!! Tell your fish cleaners to stop being so damn lazy, spend less time talking and pay attention to the way your PAID to clean...
