I tried to eat here a few years ago during Lent because I heard they had a fabulous fish fry. However, they were WAYYYY too busy to wait for a table. No fish for me! 🙁 I decided to check it out today. I parked on the street outside of the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised to see that the place was not busy. This is a small place. There are probably 12 stools along the bar and maybe 8 or 10 four tops. The bartender was the only one on the floor. She greeted me from behind the bar when I walked in and I sat myself at a table. The place was REALLY clean. It’s a really homey-looking neighborhood bar. The Tiger game was just about to start so I settled in with the menu and the game. A few minutes later, droves of people started coming in. The bar stools filled up and at least half of the tables were seated within a few minutes of the start of the Tiger’s game. The bartender (my waitress) was slammed. She gave priority to cocktails and even shouted to me at one point from behind the bar: “I have to get these drinks first, then I can get your order!!” Okkk? I was here 15 minutes before these customers but whatever… I waited about 20-25 minutes before she finally got around to taking my order and when she did, I felt guilty that I were burdening her. The food took forever to come. It arrived a FULL hour AFTER I seated myself. The food arrived in a paper-lined basket. I got a Reuben because the bartender (waitress) said they were famous for their burgers, corned beef and their Friday fish fry. Man, that Rueben was TINY for $12 and only came with a salty, sour dill pickle spear on the side! The corned beef had a good flavor but it was cold and dry. (Dry… like “corned beef jerky” dry.) However, I liked the way the bread was grilled. They used the least possible amount of butter (oil) to brown it. Sometimes the bread is too greasy on a Rueben so this was a nice change. It had a sprinkle of sauerkraut, a slice of swiss and the 1000 Island was served on the side. It was OK. In the end, I can’t give this place a high rating due to the limited menu, the SUPER SLOWWWW service, the high prices and the dry corned beef. At best, I'd rate this a 5 out of 10. I did appreciate the bartender’s attempt to make things better by charging me a couple bucks less for my sandwich but it was too little, too late. I won’t be back. Well, maybe for the fish fry during Lent. Maybe.

This bar has amazing staff, great prices, and one of the most friendly atmospheres of any bar in Detroit. I come here almost every Wednesday and I always leave satisfied. The bartender Patrick is the man! He’s always there with a good attitude, great personality, and makes you feel like a good friend when you visit. The outdoor patio is great in the summer for corn-hole or for hanging out. The inside of the bar has that rustic old charm that makes it feel like it’s been a neighborhood staple in Corktown for many years...which it has! 10/10 recommend if you’re looking for a charming hole-in-the-Wall kind of bar in Detroit.

If you love authentic neighborhood bars with interesting history, you will love this place. I was lucky enough to meet the current owner. He told me that the floors and bar are original. The original building was a general store and became a bar in the early 1900's. The corner where the stage is now was once a barber shop. The wall was knocked out and men could get a cut, shave and a drink. Genius! We got some chicken strips, mini tacos, and shrimp. The food was really great. The drinks are strong. I wish I lived closer. You'll love it!

Detroit Bus Company Drunks of Antiquity Historic Bar Tour stop.

I understand that this place has enjoyed a renaissance among hipsters and suburbanites looking for a historic place before some other event that brought them downtown to begin with. But - at least during our visit - it's not for me.

We had (a) poor service - which was, in part, due to multiple pub crawls converging at the same time, (b) a drunk stumble into my wife and almost knock her over, (c) overcrowded restrooms including obnoxious women using the men's room - thankfully, I can piss outside, (d) someone puke in the middle of the floor, and (e) a mild but constant smell of weed during our brief time here.

That having been said, I could see this as a nice stop before a Tigers day-game... During daylight hours... Before the bus...
