So I really wanted to keep an open mind about this place. I had been before for the buffet and had no issues. I'm going to put it out there, I'm vegan. It's my everything and it's important to me. I'm not here to be a money grab in LA for a restaurant that doesn't respect me or my veganism.
First off, I told the guy at the counter I was Vegan. He said "For preference or allergy?" and being an honest person I said "Preference?".
Well, he first offered me a dish where he could pick out the cheese, but otherwise mostly Vegan he says. I declined and said I wanted whichever dishes were intentionally Vegan or were in fact Vegan without removing something by means of picking it out. So he told me aloo gobi, yellow dall and channa masala. He said the roti would also be a Vegan bread option.
I remained cautious, but again, my trusting nature often leads me astray.
Once I got the meal it was apparent to everyone at my table that the dall had something fish related in it. I couldn't figure out what it might of been, but I gave it to my friend. I picked at the rest and was too scared to finish much of my meal. The sad part is Vegans can get sick eating non Vegan food, it's not just about preference. I'm an 11 year Vegetarian and last 5 years Vegan. It's been a long time since I ate meat, fish or dairy. I could still get sick. Which this review will be updated if I do and I will contact the health department to come check them out.
I don't want to have ever lie and say it's an allergy or religion, but this man has me thinking I should rethink my honesty when eating out. He's lost my trust and my business. Sadest part is since it's fish it's not even safe for vegetarians.
I digress. Vegans and Vegetarians stay away completely. Meat eaters come on down. The food was room temperature or cold, but good spices as...
Read moreGreat food, but the service is a bit lacking. I went here with friends a few years ago and had a great experience with who I think is the owner. Came back again yesterday, and our experience was just okay.
First of all, I would suggest just doing the buffet instead of paying for entrees. The buffet is $25/person and you get free mango lassi, which is great. Unfortunately, we got the entrees which turned out to be more expensive with the naan and the water. They also just give you the same dish they’re serving at the buffet, so there’s really no point.
Secondly, service was not amazing. There was only one person manning the register, taking orders, fulfilling delivery orders, and serving. The waiter forgot a lot of what we ordered, and it took some time for us to get her attention because she was so busy. This place really needs at least a second person working, especially during dinner on a Saturday. I ordered garlic naan and she promised to give a free one to my boyfriend, so supposedly we would get two pieces. She only gave us one piece because she seemed to forget that we had bought one.
That said, the employee was nice enough to give us some extra food and free water. It’s unfortunate that there’s no free tap water at this location, and you normally have to pay $2 for mini water bottles.
All in all, the food is great, but don’t bother with the single entrees. The buffet is the best value hands-down, and you don’t have to wait on someone to...
Read moreSeeing a little German in Lederhosen at entry was quite unexpected as we walked into Curry India Bistro. Modern aesthetics dominate this location--- enough to captivate even a grumpy reviewer. We were greeted by smiling owners and passed a wall of recognition (left) for excellence in cuisine and after we sat at table by the window. Inside restaurant delightful smells of aromatic cardamom, Ceylon cinnamon and Meyer lemon enticed us to partake in East Indian cuisine.
Chicken Tikka is uniquely marinated ---could not get their special secret ingredient despite my questioning. Chicken 555 is superb! This handcrafted dish is offered in bite sized morsels packed with proprietary spice yet mild enough for (no hot spices allowed) patrons. Palak Paneer is delicious---orchestrated in-house---and favorite of mine with cheese cubes made by hand. On weekends try Pistachio and Mango Kulfi ice cream (not from a container) it's divine like the family running Curry India Bistro---see photos. Buffet allows you to take a box home (for family or a meal later).
Had an epiphany upon return from Canada (Indian food heaven) East Indian cuisine---when made well, served with gratitude by a connected family---is like ambrosia. Highest rating for East Indian food in my book. Curry India Bistro is definite place to try and frequent often. They allow you to take food home from the...
