I usually don't go to pizza by the slice places but I am really glad I tried Jules. My friends and I were in the area for a curling tournament and practice. One of my teammates grew up in the area and suggested we stop at Jules on the way back to New Jersey. The interior is well done. It is modern and minimalist without looking sparse. There are some places that try looking minimalist but instead end up with an unattractive appearance. Jules has a very nice look to it. It is pizza by the slice but so much more. The pizza actually looks attractive unlike many pizza by the slice places. My wife and I are vegan but appreciated how nice all of the pizzas looked. You can also buy whole pies here. We decided to go that route. There were plenty of vegetarian/vegan options and of course you can easily make any pizza to accommodate your preferences. We went with the Vegan pizza with no vegan cheese. I was worried at first because I was amused by how they make a "vegan" pizza with practically no toppings. It is as if people forget that vegetables on a pizza are good for vegans. Oh well...my concerns were quickly alleviated. The price ($14 with tax) was amazing when we saw the size of the pizza. It isn't your traditional big round pie. It is a long, narrow oval but still substantial in size. They present the pies on flat pieces of wood that provide an attractive presentation. The crust is called thin crust but I would call it flatbread. I am a fan of that so no complaints here. The pizza itself was amazing. Far too often I eat pizza that is lacking in flavor. Even highly rated places seem to have sauce that lacks in flavor. There's usually something missing. That is definitely not the case at Jules. There was a ton of sauce (calling it sauce is not sufficient because it was more of a bruschetta topping) and it was bursting with flavor. My wife and I finished off a large. It was so good. I can't wait to go back. It is easily on par with the best places I have been to in New York and may be the best pizza I have had. I can't attest to the other pizzas with more elaborate toppings but I am sure they are also very good. I can't wait to return the next time we are...
Read moreThis is more flatbread than traditional pizza, but does that really matter? Not to me. The standard selection of pies is pretty varied and many of them change seasonally, depending on what's available. Don't like what you see? You can order a pie the way you want it. If you're dining in, you can order a whole pie or just buy slices, which they warm up for you. I love the variety of toppings, which are top shelf and sourced as locally as possible; that local sourcing really comes through in the flavor. Five stars based on taste alone. But taste alone does not a good restaurant make.
We've been eating here for about 6 years and there have been some hiccups. There have been a number of management changes in our time coming here. The first (and worst) issue we've had at Jules was being turned away one evening near closing. The posted hours said we had a half hour, door was open, so we walked in - and were promptly told they were closed. We mention the posted hours and were told those were old seasonal hours. We offered to purchase what was left on the counter, the supervisor said no and swept the pies into the trash. We complained to the owner and he acknowledged management issues with that store.
There have been a few more management changes since then. The staff of kids changes almost constantly, though management has been pretty stable for a a couple years - and the improved service reflects that.
However, since Jules has expanded so much the overall feel of the place has changed. It no longer has the feel of a small, local place. The service is stable, but it's not as friendly an welcoming as it used to be. Jules has become a medium sized local chain, and I'm glad they're successful, but sadly, it feels like a chain now. Once companies pass a certain size they lose their hometown feel and the ability to really make you feel welcome. We don't eat at Jules as often as we used to because of that (the food quality is still top shelf). We used to eat there once a week. Now it's maybe once every 4-6 weeks.
I sincerely hope Jules stops expanding and refocuses it's efforts on getting that local,...
Read moreIf you have toddler/small kid DONT GO THERE! I was with my son 3yo and a friend and had a terrible experience. The place was empty and I had my son playing with his friend on the bench (both seated on the bench playing with a little car) when a person came saying that she was tired and if they could stop yelling - they were not yelling, they were laughing and happy. If someone is tired and dont want noise this person should be at home or at the library not at a restaurante. The problem was that this person was supported by the restaurant manager that told us that the restaurant was not a playground. Yes…she gave voice to the tired lady. The kids were not jumping or yelling and the place was empty. I know that the restaurant is not a playground neither a church or meditation place! I would not let the kids on the bench playing if more people came over…I never had ANY issue before in any restaurant around. I am really disappointed with the manager and how she handle the situation. I would like to know how she would react is I had a baby crying? Ask the baby to shut up? Ask the parents to leave? I am not going back although I like the pizza…and I am telling everyone that I know that has kids to avoid this place!!! NOT KID friendly...
