An Essential Durham Gem: Where French Technique Meets Mexican Heart If you are in the Triangle area and haven't experienced The French Corner Bakery in Durham, you are seriously missing out—especially on their cannoli. I can confidently say this bakery has the best cannoli around, striking the perfect balance between a crisp shell and a rich, creamy filling. But this bakery is so much more than just a superb pastry case. Owned by Norma Garcia and her sons, Kevin and Alex, the warmth and passion you feel here are rooted in a family legacy of baking that started in Pahuatlan, Puebla, Mexico. They carry on the tradition of their grandparents, who ran a mountainside bakery for their community. After moving to Durham, the family refined their craft by apprenticing under Chef Benjamin Massaoui, mastering authentic French techniques. This incredible journey is why The French Corner Bakery’s offerings are so unique: you can enjoy a perfect baguette or croissant right alongside a phenomenal, traditional Tres Leches cake. The atmosphere is just as charming as the pastries. The interior, with its miniature Eiffel towers and antique sewing machines repurposed as cozy tables, creates a comfortable and welcoming spot that invites you to stay a while. Since Norma, Kevin, and Alex took over in January 2023, they have built something truly special. For authentic flavors, a welcoming spirit, and, of course, that world-class cannoli, The French Corner Bakery is an...

Bonjour! Let your nose be your guide as the smell of freshly baked breads and pastries whisk you into this authentic French bakery in northern Durham. The location on Pointe Drive is a bit hard to find but if you see the McDonalds and shopping strip with blue signs, you are in the right area. Master Chef Benjamin greets you with a jovial Bonjour. Upon entering the cafe, you will see frames with Parisian icons, the open bakery with large ovens and the chef himself kneading the dough. The fresh breads are displayed in a case at the front and descriptions on a chalk board menu. It is a family-run business with everyone playing their part. I love the Singer sewing machine tables and heavy wooden tables in the back where you can sit and enjoy your treats and coffee. The chairs are covered with a fleur-de-lis burlap and there is French music playing in the background. There was a constant stream of customers and I heard Benjamin say they opened at 9am on Saturday and were sold out of baguettes by 9:30. We waited for him to put in the next batch and enjoyed a savory croissant in the meantime. I would say the croissant here the best of any bakery I have been to in the Triangle. The baguette was well worth the wait and I can see why Durhamites flock to this new bakery. The cranberry nut bread is also a favorite of mine. They are closed on Sundays so stock up on other days. Everything was superb and until...

Master Chef Benjamin provides a truly authentic snapshot of the French art of delicious pastries - and, bread of course. Mille-Feuille (similar to a Napoleon but with custard between the layers instead of almond paste), an assortment of croissants, tarts, creme brulee, eclairs, and others I know not their names - but all look like something I would like. Pain Parisian, (a white loaf), and baguette are displayed in a second case - all made daily.

You are welcomed with a heartfelt 'Bonjour' from either Chef Benjamin or his more than able manager (sometimes both.) Ask for your items in French or English, you will get what you ask for, and be happy indeed with what you get.

Order something to munch on inside the shop, or take it outside to a table on the sidewalk. Coffee (strong) regular or decaf (also strong) is available to sip with your pastry.

I very strongly recommend this lovely escape from the usual donuts and long johns. Google knows where the shop is and will reliably direct you there from wherever you start.

Tell them Nick sent you - you probably won't get a discount but you will surely get a smile. That alone is a...

I am from the New York-New Jersey area, and I can tell you that this is a high quality bakery!! You can tell by the way the croissant flakes off, its the highest quality and freshest ingredients possible. All of the pastries that I had were very, very good, my wife had a ham and cheese and pesto sandwich on a croissant, she said it was extremely good because the ingredients were high quality and very fresh. That’s what made it taste so delicious. Though the owner (a French baker) retired, the staff continued his high quality and continues to uses his French recipes. A very friendly staff made the whole experience a delight!! We will definitely be back again. Though, I do wish that they put more chocolate in the chocolate croissants. I’m a bit of a chocoholic!! UPDATE 2/08/2024 My wife and I have been here 4x now. Great bakery, best in Durham!!! It never disappoints!! UPDATE 11/8/2024 This is our favorite place for coffee and bakery items!! Consistently top notch- great everything!! Even the service by Norma and Kevin is ALWAYS friendly, upbeat and welcoming!! They are a big reason why we love this place and want to return.

How have we missed this jewel til now? Chef Benjamin's "pain au chocolat" is the absolute best that we have ever tasted -- "en Paris où Valour's Patisserie & Bistro" (the best until its closing, in August 2007, in Hillsborough, NC). We took home a cinnamon roll "et un pain au chocolat" for today's breakfast, "après le petit déjeuner hier de croissants au jambon et au fromage avec pesto." Both the pastries melted in our mouths like manna from heaven. Only great discipline kept us from rushing back over to "chez Benjamin" to buy a baguette for today and to place a special order for our New Year's guests. (It's too late now for Christmas.) "Bonne année et Joyeux Noël, Chef Benjamin!"
