In a brick-walled downtown Durham space where jazz once flowed, a different kind of harmony now exists between Yonder Coffee and The Daily Beer Bar. This symbiotic relationship offers patrons a seamless transition from morning caffeine to evening libations without changing venue.
The airy interior balances industrial elements—exposed ductwork and brick—with thoughtful touches that soften the space. Pendant lights hang from black ceiling grids, while a disco ball adds an unexpected touch of whimsy. Yellow chairs provide pops of color against wooden tables and floors worn smooth by foot traffic.
Approaching the counter, a blue neon "Yonder" sign glows above a wooden bar showcasing an impressive pastry selection under glass domes. Cinnamon rolls with generous icing, jam-filled croissants, rustic bread, and chocolate chip cookies tempt even those who arrived without hunger. Customers perch on barstools or settle into the comfortable yellow couch that offers a more leisurely experience against the weathered brick backdrop.
By mid-morning, the space buzzes with productivity—patrons typing on laptops, small groups engaged in conversation, solo visitors absorbed in books. The design accommodates various needs without feeling crowded, maintaining the flexibility that allows this space to transform throughout the day.
The matcha latte deserves special mention. Served in a branded cup, its vibrant green surface showcases impressive latte art. The first sip reveals a perfect balance:earthy with subtle sweetness, neither bitter nor cloying, and a silky texture that demonstrates true craftsmanship. It's excellent by any standard and worth a visit alone.
What distinguishes this establishment from countless other coffee shops is its inventive beverage program. While most cafés align with a single roaster, Yonder partners with multiple American roasters and features a rotating international selection each month—a philosophy stemming from founder Caleb Durham's original vision for a global coffee subscription service. This approach offers regulars perpetual discovery without leaving their neighborhood.
As noon approaches, The Daily's identity emerges more prominently. Two refrigerated cases stand side by side—one labeled "Boozy Drinks!" filled with craft beers in colorful cans and natural wines with artistic labels, the other "Non-Alcoholic Drinks!" stocked with equally thoughtful options. This careful curation reflects the same ethos that governs the coffee program: quality over quantity, with emphasis on independent producers creating distinctive products.
The transition feels natural rather than jarring. There's no rush to clear out coffee drinkers when alcohol service begins. Instead, the space accommodates both simultaneously, allowing customers to choose their preferred refreshment. This flexibility represents the European café model that inspired owners John and Rosa Paradiso, where establishments serve different purposes throughout the day rather than limiting themselves to single functions.
Despite the dual concept, there's nothing diluted about either experience. The coffee program competes with dedicated specialty shops; the beer and wine selections rival focused bars. Neither feels like an afterthought, and the food bridges both worlds—simple yet satisfying sandwiches, salads, and shareable snacks complement both coffee and alcohol.
In a restaurant landscape often defined by narrow specialization, this approach feels refreshingly pragmatic. The space serves the community's actual rhythms rather than forcing artificial distinctions between daytime and evening needs. It's a third place in the truest sense—neither home nor office but somewhere equally comfortable for both productivity and relaxation.
For visitors seeking the authentic Durham experience, this establishment offers something chain cafés cannot: a genuine reflection of the city's creative spirit and community focus. Read moreYonder has an incredible selection and variety of coffee drinks, retail, pastries, food and other beverages like matcha, tea and bottled goods.
I started off with a flight of three filtered coffee options that have been carefully selected to encompass “the range” coffee has. I really enjoyed reading both Yonder’s thoughts on the coffee as well as information about the roaster, farmer and process of the coffees that was provided with my flight.
The first flight offering was a washed Colombian (the “daily” - this is a consistent offering of theirs by Parlor Coffee, New York) The second signified a “fruity and bright” option and Yonder was showcasing Hex Coffee Roasters. The third was an international coffee by Ditta Artigianale, a coffee roaster from Florence, Italy. These coffee roasters are all exceptional and I felt very lucky to be able to taste them. They were all brewed well and with care.
Later, my husband and I got two of their winter seasonal offerings: an iced tiramisu coffee and a cinnamon date cappuccino. They equally were crafted well and the flavor had so much depth!
There is plenty of seating inside the shop and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

Read moreYonder Coffee is overall a great pick for morning coffee and/or matcha.
I got a matcha latte, which was fairly priced. And they added simple syrup to it for free! They also offer the most delicious honey which can be added for I think $0.75. The barista told me it was from the owner’s friend’s (I think?) honeycombs! Their matcha is tried and true here for me. Pretty solid option and I appreciate the effort the baristas put in to make them look pretty lol. Other than matcha, it seems that they bring in great roasters from all over, so I’d like to try what they brew as well as their house made syrups.
The focaccia I got was from a bakery nearby, sadly I’m not sure which one though because it was amazingggg. They are able to warm up baked goods which is a PLUS on a cold day like today.
The staff is extremely kind and knowledgeable. But it’s not a proper coffee shop without a barista who’s a little upset at the world (hence the rating I gave for service).
Atmosphere I have to give 3 stars just because it’s also a bar and it feels icky to be mixing those two vibes together lol. But I still love the place overall.
Definitely will make this a regular stop for morning coffee/matcha when...
