If you're not a local the main entrance in not well marked that we could see. We entered through the bar because that's where we saw people coming and going. We awkwardly stood for a minute or two with staff at the bar and two other at their POS system. No one acknowledged us. We eventually saw the hostess down a ramp at their front door. When we checked in, she was very nice and we were quickly seated. Our waitress was good and attentive throughout our meal. The atmosphere is great. It's an old building refurbished into a lovely place to sit and socialize. It's simply designed but done well. The bar was packed but they also had tables to sit at. They also have a separate dining space. The menu is small, I didn't take any pics, but it hasn't seemed to change in the last 2 weeks per another review I read. The menu states they have a changing menu with the seasons however, so maybe the fall menu is different? Do not order the Fruiti De Mar pasta. Just don't. The mussels tasted muddy, like one actually tasted like the smell of swamp mud so the remaining ones were left to the side, my husband said the same thing about his. You also don't get a small plate or bowl to place their shells on, not a big deal, but wherever I've been served mussels I get something to place the shells on. The shrimp were slightly over done and dry, but the crab was okay. The noodles were so dry. They tasted like they were taken straight out of the pasta water, left out to dry some then placed on the plate with the seafood and not even hot. There was no sauce, no butter, not even a lemon to squeeze over it, nothing! I had to salt it because the noodles weren't even salted very well. Just plane, dry noodles, 6 shrimp, 6 mussels and about 1/2 cup of crab meat plopped on top. For $28/plate for this particular dish, I felt I paid too much for what I got. The blackberry cider is very good and beer/cider/ales run about $7 each. The Mahi dip was pretty good as well, it came with grilled bread slices that were awesome. If you like bread at your table you have to order a $6 bread plate and the same for a salad ($10-12). All sides are also separate and about $7 each. Most restaurants I've been to include bread and a salad with the meal. We opted to not get the bread plate and salads. Our bill was $92 for 1 app, 1 cider, 1 sour, and 2 main dishes (we both got the seafood pasta). I'd like to try this place again, mostly for the atmosphere, and I'm hoping other dishes stand out over the failed seafood pasta. Maybe add a butter sauce, Alfredo, lemon, something, ANYTHING to give it flavor! Don't let this pasta dish be the downfall of this really cool restaurant! It seems this is the dish all reviewers focus on in a negative light. I did read the reviews that mentioned the pasta, but I was hoping they were wrong or too picky. They were not lol. I hope the chef reads these and knows it's not from a bad place, we want places like this to succeed in our small towns, they bring other people here, they make the area worth coming to! Please, for all that is holy, add some flavor to that pasta dish or take it off the menu, it's definitely not what...
Read moreThe Herringbone in Edenton has been one of our favorite places to patronize for fine dinning. We gave “Grace” our 1st visit because it was newly opened… staffing issues. We arrived at 3:30 -4:00 and sat 30 mins before anyone came to our table. We were then told it was not time for the evening menu, apparently we’d arrived between changing of the shifts? … we were told we’d have to order drinks and wait until the appropriate time when orders were taken for evening meal which was 5:00 best I can recall. We excused that visit because they were new… learning curve we thought. We left. We did go back numerous times to patronize The Herringbone because they are basically the only restaurant open on Sunday for a good meal. We enjoy the atmosphere for the most. Brunch is always awesome! However on 2/11/24 my wife and I met our friends for brunch and we were astonished at the noise level of the staff while they were literally breaking down tables all around us as we tried to eat and have a conversation with our friends. This loud ruckus went on the entire time of our visit. Hammering the metal legs of the table, extremely loud & absolutely not acceptable. I understand they needed to set up for the “Special Event” that evening however; not at our expense. My wife did call and speak with the manager. She wasn’t too happy with his response. He Apologized for “the ruckus” but stated it was necessary & the only the way his staff could break down the tables & if he’d been there overseeing it’d been handled differently. I’m not sure why the employees were not trained properly? This is a prime example of Poor leadership & pitiful customer service. The Manager was not very interested in our point of view considering our dinning experience which was not what one would expect at the Herringbone. Sadly, after reading multiple reviews… it seems the manager doesn’t seem to offer anything but a fast & snappy tone of “I apologize for your Dinning experience” …in my opinion, this is not the way customers expect to be treated. We are Very disappointed in the experience of Dinning at the Herringbone on Sunday and extremely disappointed with the manager’s inability to make this situation right. However; this seems from reading other complaints this is his norm response. This is Inexcusable & if locals aren’t treated in a respectful manner why would we/they suggest Dinning at the Herringbone when we/they have family/friends visiting this area? We are disappointed in reading how others have been treated by the...
Read moreUnfortunately our food was not cooked well when we visited. I was so excited to try the Twisted Willow pork, as I know how good the quality of their meat it. It was burnt to charcoal in spots and immediately seized up when I cut through it, making the meat tough instead of tender. My roasted potatoes were cooked similarly. The first bite I took, was regrettably a mostly charcoaled piece of potato with an equally burnt (both were far beyond "charred") piece of pork, as I didn't flip the chop to check the cook on both sides before eating it (who does?!). All I could taste from then on, was charcoal. About 40% of the potatoes were inedible. The food was very over- and under seasoned. My husband had the Steak Frites and all that tasted like, was pepper. The cook on his food was great, however. Mine wasn't really seasoned at all, so I used the sauce from his food to try seasoning mine while also trying to mask the burnt. As we came in the evening and the food took a significant time to arrive (no big deal, if it's tasty!) and my pallette couldn't distinguish good flavors anymore, I would've sent it back and ask for a new plate. On the upside; the asparagus with parm were perfection and the sourdough was excellent (though a little high in price for 3 half-slices). I'm hopeful we just ended up with plates that aren't their norm.. but I'm in no hurry to return - even though they had an interesting menu I was excited to try more of, until the food arrived.
I'm not someone who likes to complain or cause a fuss, so this isn't a review to tell others not to go. It's just a heads-up that it CAN happen.
We had empty cups for quite some time before being offered refills, several times, and we were barely noticed/acknowledged by the waitstaff. Unsure if it was due to us not fitting the description of the majority of the other patrons or not but either way; no one wants to feel excluded by someone's judgement.
Hopefully I'll go back one day, with a compliment...
