Square Rigger Restaurant — Restaurant in Edgartown

My family and I went to the vineyard for the first time. In our first night we went to Square Rigger restaurant. They were busy so they put us in a back room that had 2 other tables filled with guests. We arrived at the restaurant around 7pm. The waitress came and took our orders. The owner came in and chatted with my husband in Portuguese and was very friendly and he assured us we would be getting our appetizers soon. About an hour later a waitress came in and said the prior waitress forgot to submit our order and she assured us she would put it in. They kept saying how busy the restaurant was, but I reminded her that we are paying customers too. We finally got our appetizers around 8:30 pm. It was good, but we waited such a long time to get it. About 45 minutes later our entrees came. Since we were not happy for the wait, the waitress offered to remove the cost of the appetizers. In all we waited approximately 2 1/2 hours to be served food, which is ridiculous! On top of that I was given the wrong vegetable with my salmon and my hot salmon was set on top of lukewarm mashed potatoes. It was also supposed to come with asparagus , but it was served with broccoli and carrots. I reminded the waitress that the menu said asparagus and she told me it was supposed to be broccoli and carrots. Then she went out of the room and slammed the door shut behind her. It felt like she was taking her anger out on us because I complained about the incorrect vegetables . The door to the dining area we were in was previously open so I got up and opened the door as a closed door would have given them more reason to forget about us completely. She came back about 10 minutes later with blanched asparagus. They were big and swollen looking and very unappetizing looking. We were very dissatisfied with this service and let them know. We weren’t rude or anything, but was hoping for a better outcome. Then a different waiter came in looking angry and asked what we wanted them to do. So he had an attitude but we were being mistreated!! I reminded him that a different waitress was going to remove the cost of the appetizer, but no one seemed to remember that. Finally another waitress came in and remembered what she said. The real insult was after all of that awful treatment, they had the nerve to tack on an 18% gratuity to the bill. We were a party of 4, not a large group! We paid it, but the food and service was not worth that! As we left they were standing in a line to thank us for coming. What a horrendous experience! My boyfriend took me here for my birthday yesterday. What a complete disappointment. Last year we had clams 2 times and they were like the clams of my childhood. We ordered clams yesterday that went up 30% at least. The plastic take out container had greasy fingerprints all over it. There were maybe 9 clams inside on top of a huge pile of French fries. The clams were smaller than a half dollar and were awful. I had a Rigger burger as the girl called it and it was mediocre at best. My boyfriend had a fish sandwich that he said was alright. The grand total was 88.00. Really, for what? That was the last time for us. All done.

Saturday June 22nd. So I am updating my initial post from June 20th. My boyfriend had taken me to the Rigger for take out and we were very disappointed. Only a few hours later management contacted me with Apologies and an offer for a gift card. I called and spoke to the kitchen manager Camilla who was genuinely very apologetic and professional. She even apologized for my Birthday meal being spoiled. My boyfriend and I went down to pick up the gift card Saturday 6/22. The food was awesome! Great flavors and wonderful portions! My wife had the salmon, I had the paella. Both were absolutely delicious, and the staff was extremely pleasant and fun to be with! We are VINEYARDERS and found our new go to restaurant!

My wife and I went back one week later and were not disappointed!! Consistent excellence!!! Natalia, our waitress, was super attentive. Kamila made awesome drinks and introduced us to a delicious dessert ( a peach mousse, made from the chef's mom's recipe), and the chef, Everton, made an awesome paella for us both. The staff are warm, personable, and fun to be with.Very homey and family oriented with a Brazilian flare. The calamari appetizer was both delicious and plentiful, no skimping on the portion or the flavor!!!! This place is an Edgartown gem, and a much improved upgrade over the previous Square Rigger.
