My family and I came here to celebrate my birthday. On the surface it seems like just an ordinary Indian/Thai restaurant, but this is so much more. The food was absolutely incredible. Everything, the tandoor chicken, chicken tikka masala, the goat biriyani, the evil jungle princess (this is as good and as interesting as it sounds), the drunken noodles, I could go on (we were a large party, so we had all of this and more in a single sitting). The dishes are presented very well, portions are fair (if not a bit more than you’d expect), and tastes excellent.
But, more than just the food and the pricing, what this restaurant and its owner, Kannan, and his staff have woven into this restaurant is the very unique Indian culture around hospitality. We were a party of 11 and walked in without a reservation on a Saturday afternoon. The table was adjusted and we were seated immediately. Kannan greeted us and had loads of suggestions for what apps and dishes to try. As an Indian myself, walking into this restaurant felt like being in the house of one of my relatives in India. It was that welcoming. When he found out it was my birthday, he brought out a very generous slice of chocolate cake, homemade ice cream with mango drizzle, and lit candles. It made my day. Throughout our stay Kannan got to know us as people and I wish I had the chance to get to know him more (but I’ll be back to do exactly this). This is what so many restaurants fail to capture and what Spice does so naturally. It’s not enough to just have phenomenal food; you have to have good people who care at the forefront and that’s exactly what Spice nails so well.
Before I end, I have to say that, if you go, you must have their signature orange kulfi as dessert. It’s a brilliantly-made orange-flavored kulfi served inside sliced orange peels. It’s absolutely delicious and I’m so glad Kannan was insistent we try some. The icing on the cake was that because he wanted us so badly to try it, he gave us two servings of it free of charge, in addition to not charging for my cake and ice cream.
TL;DR: go to Spice. You’ll walk away having had a delicious and filling meal, not feeling a dent in your wallet, and thinking that maybe you just found members of your family that you didn’t know existed...
Read moreWe live half a mile from this place, but we have only been there 2x in four years. Neither my husband nor I could remember why we hadn’t been back since the last time, over a year ago. Our memories foggy, we decided to order Spice takeout tonight. We both ordered Indian dishes. Three bites in, and neither of us can finish our entrees. My husband ordered Vegetable Jalfreezi. He spooned some of the soft, limp vegetables onto his pile of rice. The vegetables obviously came from a frozen mix, like the kind your mom buys to go with pot roast plus generic stir fry vegetables, all mixed together, including corn kernels. Corn? Sugar snap peas, krinkle cut carrots, diced carrots, peas, cauliflower... a hodge podge of overcooked vegetable matter thrown together in desperation. They actually taste like they were pickled vegetables.
I ordered Chicken Chettinadu, after reading yelp reviews to see what people liked. What I got was the saltiest, greasiest, fattiest sauce I have ever tasted with chewy, overcooked pieces of chicken suspended in an oily ghee mixture with a few herbs floating around. I tried to skim off some of the red grease but it just kept rising to the top. The saltiness is so intense that it feels like I burnt my tongue. I tried to eat the chicken without the sauce, and it is still unpalatable.
We ordered pashwari naan which should be stuffed with white raisins and pistachios. Instead, it looks and tastes like a paste of red dye number 1 inside wet pizza dough. I am not exaggerating. Pictures attached.
So now we remember why we haven’t gone back—although, if it had been this bad last time I am certain we would have remembered that. It couldn’t have been this bad. Because I will never forget this big waste of $45 on $10 worth of salt, fat,...
Read moreSo, my family and I have been eating at Spice since it opened. It has always been a delight to the palate; being some of the most perfectly spiced Indian food I've ever tasted. (I am something of a connoisseur.) We often look forward to their Sunday buffet all week!
Recently, Spice hired a new cook. We went to their buffet unknowingly, and the food HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER!!! There were so many special treats in addition to the varying fare of the buffet. We were shown how to eat Pani Puri, a street/festival food. These are incredible little puffed bread-balls (Puri) which one fills with various chopped bits of vegetables and assorted chutneys, and then pops the whole thing in one's mouth for a true sensory and textured explosion! They also had several new desserts, including homemade ice creams that were a real treat.
Post-COVID the buffet is closed (tragically!) but the food remains the best Indian in the area, by far. The Thai food is also excellent! (Try their Drunken Noodles)
If you seek out top-quality Indian and Thai food (in great variety) that is spiced to absolute perfection, Spice...
