The crepery looked closed when driving by, even though sunny his mood was dark as a bitter cold day.
On facing the door and welcoming the change from the typical day the cafe was open and lively with a collection of people…
Just like gateau, (or crepe cake) he knew he had had a cortado once or perhaps twice and today he would try again. But what was a cortado, and did he need it?…there had been so much coffee in this lifetime was more needed? Would it ease the existential angst that was consuming what little sanity he had left?
The cakes were mountainous, this escape from the ordinary routine might be too much of a detour, too much of a stop on the way to any sense of accomplishment on this Monday. But they had coincided. The man seeking an epicurean distraction and a slice of Biscoff Raspberry Gateau. And the cortado was ordered not knowing fully what it was.
On the arrival of the gateau he recalled there had been three coincidences: the first time in a cafe in Minneapolis, the second at Mamie Gateau in Paris, and now today.
Looking at the gateau covered in a coulis of raspberry and a flurry of dark chocolate flakes he thought simultaneously of the second slice of gateau in Paris and a Salade Nicoise eaten at midnight next to a dour Algerian near the Bastille. He spoke as travelers do to dining companions. “My father was in Algeria during the war”. The Algerian was irritated and unimpressed and asked with the help of the barmaid why his father was in Algeria making war on Algerians? In minimal French he replied no, that his father was fighting the Germans, not Algerians…the Algerian man was unimpressed and went back to his beer.
Today’s gateau was almost too much, too tall, and formidable. At the first forkful it melted in the mouth and had a conversation with the cortado which took the edge off the day.
