I have a rule on vacation to never go to a place with less than 4.5 stars on Google, but for some reason made an exception. That was a poor choice. We called ahead on a Friday night around 5:00 pm and they said there was no wait and they didn't take call aheads so just come on in. When we got there the hostess asked if we had a reservation for our group of 7 and when we said "we did not, but the person on the phone said to just come in" she snapped that she was aware of that and then asked repeatedly if our whole party was there before finally seating us. The atmosphere has ok decor with taxidermied animals if you like that, but I would not call it a cool ambiance or super welcoming feeling.
Our waitress was friendly and told us how great all the food was and took our drink orders. When she returned a couple of people weren't ready to order so she gave us "a couple of minutes" and then we did not see her for over 10 minuted. While ordering I was unsure if I wanted a baked potato or if I could trust their fries to be good. The waitress assured me their fries were great so I went with them. Our bread was brought quickly, but our food then took a long time to arrive. I would totally understand if it was a busy night, but it did not appear to be very busy for a Friday. I could also forgive food taking a while to show up, especially at a steak, seafood, and game restaurant if it all came out tasting amazing.
The food was NOT amazing. The french fries, which we were told were amazing, were luke warm, soft, and not seasoned, not even with salt. They appeared to be generic frozen thick cut fries, they weren't fried to be crispy and were not salted right out of the frier so no salt or seasoning would stick to them. The mixed veggies were over cooked and appeared to come out of a warming station rather than being cooked to order. The snap peas were partially wrinkly and soggy rather than crisp, the squash (yellow and zucchini) was mushy all the way through, and the carrots were burned. One person ordered the 2 chicken breasts with one as grilled and one as BBQ. These came as a two flattened very thin breasts with grill marks of both sides and no sauce or difference in cooking. Grilled should be grilled (like both were) and BBQ should be slow smoked or cooked with BBQ seasoning and sauce on it. The waitresses fix for this was to bring a cup of BBQ sauce for dipping. The breasts were both extremely dry and overcooked. Another person ordered the Alfredo with chicken added. This means you get the exact same overcooked "grilled" chicken cut in slices and plopped on top of the pasta. The cuts are so large you have to take it off onto another plate, cut it up yourself, then put it back in the pasta and mix it in yourself. The alfredo sauce was broken, likely from sitting in the pot simmering too long so it was barely holding on the top of the pasta and was chunky in the bottom of the bowl. I ordered a quail and game sausage combo, the sausage was not brought out. The quail did have a nice crisp to it, but was slightly overcooked, however, it was much better than the very dry grilled chicken the other diners got. When the sausage was brought out after I asked for it, it was fine. The diner who got Crab Cakes and Shrimp had well seasoned and tasty shrimp, but once again they were overcooked and chewy, but shrimp is very forgiving so it was ok. The crab cake had a good crisp on one side, but not the other and again was a little dry, but not terrible. The last diner in our group had the best luck by getting the medium rare 6 oz elk steak with mushrooms added. The elk was cooked perfectly and the mushrooms were good.
While eating our server checked on us once then again disappeared until we finally flagged her down for the check and to complain about the over cooked chicken. We were brought the wrong check that was over $100 too high. We got the correct check and were told that nothing could be done about the chicken, but they did give us a piece of cheesecake for free.
Easily our worst meal of vacation,...
Read moreWe ate at The Gashouse Restaurant during our family vacation last week. I have never left a negative review for a restaurant but felt it necessary so that others can avoid this mistake. There are too many great spots in Vail to waste time and money at The Gashouse.
We ordered appetizers, drinks, entrees, extra sides, and desserts. Our bill was $450 for our family of 5. We are accustomed to Vail pricing, but the menu items were priced too high for the quality of food we received. For being considered a steak house, the steak we were served was overcooked, dry, and tough. None of the meat was served at the right temperature. We also ordered elk and could barely chew it enough.
I could see past all of that and decide not to return next time, but the reason I'm writing this review is because of the hostess and the way she treated us.
Once we paid our bill, she came over and said that she had a party of 10 people waiting and we needed to leave immediately. She said we were there "long enough" (It had been just over an hour and we were being served the entire time.) We were dumbfounded.
We looked around and there were plenty of open tables. There was no reason she needed our small table, where we had 1 person on an end because it was a table meant for 4 people. We obliged and left. As we were walking out, we noticed more empty tables in other rooms. And to top it off... there was NOT ONE PERSON WAITING IN THE RECEPTION AREA to be seated! A week later, I'm still in shock at the boldness and rudeness of that hostess. I truly can not believe this restaurant is successful in a place that has so many more amazing options for dining!
After we left, I pulled up the Yelp reviews and lots of other people have had similar experiences at The Gashouse. Do yourself a favor and pick one of the tens and tens of AMAZING restaurants in...
Read moreWhen we first arrived, we were not greeted with a "hello" or "welcome." It was 5:28 (reservation was at 5:30 and the restaurant posted a fifteen minute grace period, so we were early in arrival). Our party of 10 was mostly there, with three individuals on their way (a few minutes out). The host (a tall male fellow with an angry countenance), said to us as SOON as we entered (the restaurant was EMPTY), "If you're whole party isn't here, we will have issues." He still sat us (It was 5:30 by this time) and we received ice water from our server, whom was very friendly. The front desk host then came over to our table, at 5:35, and said very rudely, "If your three are not here in the next minute, we will have a HUGE PROBLEM!" His countenance was so rude and he spoke very angrily with a gruff voice. Keep in mind, it was 5:35 and the restaurant had only two other tables being served. We even heard one of the other servers rushing the patrons to order. He said, "I can't wait long on your order." It was absolutely the rudest service we've ever received. Our party got up and left. There were 7 of us at the time and our three were just entering (at 5:36 pm). The host didn't say a word but defended himself and said he was "only doing his job." There was no apology for how we were spoken to. There were no smiles, only scowls and sneers. The Gashouse, as it may have been a great establishment in the past, has gotten very very bad. I give it 1 star only because I feel so sad for our server who would have gotten a HUGE tip from 10 people that love to eat and drink the finest foods. We will never go there again. The host made us feel bad about ourselves, like we were a huge problem. There was no respect and no kindness shown. We are Oklahomans, and we don't ever receive this kind of treatment in our state. It...
