Handel's Homemade Ice Cream — Restaurant in Elk Grove

If you’ve read my past reviews, you have probably gathered that I’m a pretty frugal person. I try to buy things only when on sale, I search feverishly for coupon codes when shopping online, and I try my hardest not to make impulse purchases (I’m definitely a work in progress when it comes to this one). Therefore, when my sister and my son suggested that I check out Handels Ice Cream, I was a bit skeptical. Although the prices aren’t crazy expensive, it’s definitely not as reasonable as Rite Aid’s (if you can find one that is still in business) ice cream.

Upon walking up to the outdoor stand, we were greeted by an employee ready to take our orders. After browsing the overwhelming variety of options (I spotted at least five other flavors that intrigued me), I opted for the Chocoholic Peanut Butter Ripple. Two minutes later we were walking away from the order window immediately taking licks of our ice cream. Based on the taste of my order, I can definitely see what the hype is about and why there is no comparison to Rite Aid ice cream. The chocolate and peanut butter was very rich and flavorful; so rich that I almost neglected to eat lunch because I felt like I consumed a meal.

After a hot frustrating day we saw Handel’s “coming soon” sign and to our delight they were open! They just opened today. Great timing! So many goodies on the menu with lots of great & different flavors of ice cream. For our first time tasting their ice cream. We devoured an ice cream Sunday with Black Cherry with whole cherries, pistachio & mocha almond fudge topped with the best tasting fudge sauce ever! Whipped cream, 3 cherries, whole toasted pecans on top and they sliced the banana (yay!). OMG! The very best ice cream we’ve ever had, since the gelato in Italy. Thick, rich, creamy homemade deliciousness! This was a cheat day for us and I saw that they sell pints and had a sugar free banana fudge something flavor, which we tasted and had to be reassured it was really sugar free! Yumm-O! Also tasted a lemon & a raspberry with chunks of chocolate. Both were to die for! And FYI, Sery hates lemon desserts of any kind. Even she loved the lemon! We will most definitely be back! And my BFF is an ice cream Queen, I’m definitely hooking her up with this place! Handel’s, our new ice cream place of choice! Btw, no one is paying us or bribing us for this review. Banana shake is good. In Elk Grove this passes as decent but if you go anywhere closer to Sacramento this just doesn’t cut it. Friendly staff though. Please clean up your patio area, it’s pretttyyy rough.

Just want to update my review to clarify in response: Banana milkshake doesn't need improvement its solid, some of the other flavors though seem a bit like store bought flavors and don't really jump out as handmade to me although I'm sure they probably are. I've actually been here quite a few times and still plan to return as its probably the best you'll find here in EG. But the patios are always dirty when I come so I definitely don't see it as normal, the trash is always so full its overflowing as well- I would love for it to be cleaner normally as I like to bring my dogs here. Looking forward to it being more clean though, I would probably come...
