Moy’s has always been a 5 Star Restaurant to my family. We’ve actually been eating here for two generations. But we had a recent, unfortunate incident at Moy’s which may result in our never being able to eat there ever again since it involves a health issue. I am allergic to tree nuts and last week we ordered our usual items that we have always known were free from tree nuts: egg rolls, fried rice, Mongolian Beef and we decided to splash out on a pressed duck but ask them to leave off the almonds. These are all things we have ordered before. This time however, after we said we could not have the nuts, they said there was a problem. It seems they had just fried their almonds for the week and they would not be changing the oil for several days. They explained that this is the same oil they would be using to fry egg rolls, and everything breaded. My husband tried to explain the concept of cross contamination and allergens but they did not seem overly concerned. They had been doing it this way for 23 years. This now makes us think back to the last evening that we had gotten Moy’s for take out. I had an episode that evening where I found it difficult to breath. And I can think back to other evenings when I had similar episodes and we never knew the cause. I feel lucky that I did not have a full anaphylactic shock episode as I have when I eat even a sliver of a tree nut. Moy’s can easily change the way they fry their almonds. There is no reason to contaminate all the oil with nuts when they could easily be fried in a smaller container. We really do not care if they have been frying them that way for 23 years. That is no longer an acceptable method. As things stand, I cannot go back to Moy’s and it has always been my favorite...
Read moreMoy's used to be pretty good. The last time I was there was in 2006. Now it's gross and run down inside. When you walk in it smells musty and was damp with no air circulation. It was almost 6 p.m. and not a soul was dining in. There were only 2 people in sight, one waitress standing by a table with orders ready for pick up and a man behind the register. I had to ask him for a menu because I guess I was invisible. I had questions about the menu, but no matter what I asked he kept saying: "Yes good portions, you like." So I went ahead and ordered the Beef with Broccoli and 4 Egg Rolls. I specifically asked for ONLY the Beef and the Broccoli with nothing else in it, and thought I made it clear after repeating it to him a few times to make sure he understood. I waited 20 minutes which is acceptable. I checked my order before I left and it had everything mixed in the Beef and Broccoli! When I told him he grabbed the whole bag and walked away with it. Then 5 minutes later brought the bag back and rudely said: "Okay now only Beef and Broccoli". So I'm sure they dumped it on a plate or something, and picked out just the Beef and Broccoli and put it back in the container. When I got home and opened the rice it slid out in one clump and was super greasy! Not fluffy fresh rice. It was hard, yellowish, old greasy rice. I don't know anyone who would have ate that. The beef was tough like it was reheated too many times, and the broccoli was just soppy "mush" so I threw it out after a few bites. The 4 eggrolls were edible so that was my $29.00 dinner. I wouldn't go back there again if...
Read moreMy wife and I have had trouble finding good Chinese food in the Midwest. My wife is from DC and I have lived in the south and the East coast and all Midwest Chinese food tastes fake to me. The best American Chinese food I've ever had was a variant on Sesame chicken from a hole in the wall in Lynchburg VA, and my wife had a similar experience from a place in Bristow, VA. We havent found a single place in Wisconsin we would consider returning to.
So when multiple people told me they drive out of town just to get Chinese food from Moy's, they got my attention, and on a recent trip back from Illinois we decided to stop.
First of all, some of the other reviews mention the service being rude or bad. That was not our experience. Everyone we encountered was friendly, police, and just overall excellent service.
We got an appetizer sampler that had beef skewers, ribs, fried shrimp, egg rolls, and crab rangoon. The beef skewers and egg rolls were excellent, definitely well above average. The ribs and crab rangoon were standard. The fried shimp didnt do anything for either of us.
We both got sesame chicken and pork fried rice. The pork fried rice was also excellent, well above average. The sesame chicken was average, maybe a little subpar.
The tea was also above average.
There are probably entrees as excellent as the best things we tried, but not the one we are looking for. We'll go back, but we wont go...
