Mazzini's Italian Restaurant — Restaurant in Elkin

• Update - Upon reviewing my checking account, after this dining experience being the ONLY transaction I made that day, Jan 4, 2025, I found 4 unauthorized charges. Albiet, they were small charges that added up to $5, but they were unauthorized charges nonetheless. Use cash!!! * Calling all New England transplants!!!!! We've been in the area for almost 7 years and we've had terrible experiences with restaurant food. No flavor, everything smothered in black pepper, steak marinated in coffee, you name it. We had an appointment in Elkin that took way longer than expected, so naturally, we're starving. We'd never tried Mazzini's and my husband has been feigning for a calzone, so, with 4.5 stars, we decided to give it a try. He ordered a cheese calzone and added mushrooms, with marinara on the side. We've ordered calzones in other places and none have ricotta cheese in them, like they're supposed to. He was wicked happy that this was filled with ricotta and mozzarella!!! Smothered in garlic butter on top too!! Absolutely amazing! I ordered a steak grinder, with mushroom, onion, green pepper and cheese. I'm a D'Angelo's gal, so I'm often disappointed when I order a steak and cheese grinder... not here. The bread was amazingly soft, the grinder was packed with steak and OPM, with just the right ooey gooey cheese and some mayo, with a side of onion rings. Ordering deep fried food has been a disappointment too because everything always tastes like burnt dirty oil. Not here. These onion rings were fresh, crisp and didn't have a hint of oily taste!! If I could give 10 stars, I would. This is as close to New England flavor as you can get! Everything just tasted fresh, without pepper masking it, just the right seasonings to make the fresh food pop... Our daughter just ordered boneless wings LOL but they were good too! For the 3 of us, it was o ly $38.00. Can't beat that! We will definitely be going back next time we're in...

A local hiker on the Power House Trail recommended as I am not from this area. Good recommendation.

I arrived around opening and was greeted by who I am assuming is the owner. Quickly sat. I didn't catch the name of my waitress but she was a young lady, perhaps a teenager, but was attentive and pleasant. Good service throughout.

Broad menu with pastas, subs, calzones, pizzas, etc. I settled on a side salad (2.99) and a meat calzone (9.99). The side salad was excellent and a total dark horse. I honestly can't remember having such a simple salad be so good. The blue cheese was among the best I remember sampling anywhere. The calzone was liberally filled with meat (hamburger, meatballs, meat sauce) with mozzarella being the cheese. This was huge and enough to satisfy a hangry appetite. The dipping sauce is a great addition. Solid.

The same lady, again I am assuming is the owner, small chatted with me about where I am from, my workplace, what brought me to the restaurant, etc. Thanks. Small talk is always excellent no matter where you go. Appreciated.

Will add that I noticed how clean the joint was. I know a lot of reviews talk about this just to fill up a review. No. Everything was spotless to where it was noticeable to my eye. I don't necessarily hawk-eye for things like this but it couldn't be ignored. The dining area has at least one tv that I could tell if this is something that interests you.

I am never in Elkin but if I am, I know...

I want to give a shout out for service. I placed a order to go and tried to explained what I wanted to the lady when placing order and went to pick up and pay. Once I got home with ordering was wrong. I called back and spoke with manager and told him what was wrong and he was very nice and said immediately he was sorry and when I come back they would make it right. I ended up sick and was not able to go back til a week later. When I went in I believe I delt with the owner a very nice lady she knew about the situation and refunded me and had an extra order of what I wanted originally and gave me the order free and was so nice. I was so shocked and thankful that she went above and beyond like I held my self back in my banking days. Nice to see their are still people in the customer service area that take proud in their business and taking care of their customers and make you feel valued. Especially in the world today I will be back with them soon and continue enjoying their food. If owner wants to I will get my wife share her recipe of her garlic bread with them not saying there's is not good but my wife's bread is out of this world and they may want to add her bread to menu. Hope they don't...
