My husband and I were visiting family in the area, and decided to try Oxley Place for dinner at 6 pm on a recent Saturday evening. The restaurant is stylish and comfortable - a nice vibe. Granted it was early, but it was not busy. The waitress took our drinks order. I ordered a glass of white wine; the pour was not generous to say the least. I am familiar with the wine chenin/viognier. The glass I was served did not taste as usual. I returned it and ordered a glass of red (which was fine) to accompany the strip steak as a main course. In the meantime, we ate the broccoli /brussell sprouts appetizer which was delicious! When the strip steak was served it was so rare as to be inedible (I had ordered medium). My husband had ordered a ribeye - he had requested rare - which was served medium. I can only guess that the kitchen mixed up the order. The waitress asserted that she had submitted the order as requested. I assured her that it was not her fault, and we left a generous tip. Rather than have the strip steak recooked or replaced, I ordered a burger, and called it a night. My husband's meal, despite the steak being a bit overcooked to his taste, was very good. Overall, the evening was disappointing. This is a restaurant with a lot of potential. But, i think a bit more wait-staff training is required to handle complaints, and, also, to answer questions about the wine list. A wait-person may not drink, but, should still be able to field queries about the wines on offer. The kitchen needs to pay more attention to order details. I should add we are seniors who have eaten in restaurants all over the U.S. Thank...
Read moreI want to preface this by saying I HATE giving bad reviews, especially for local places. I want these places to thrive in our community because they make it better. With that said, here is my review of the Oxley House.
Good: The atmosphere and aesthetic of this place is great. The cocktails my wife and I ordered, along with my wife’s shrimp and grits were delicious.
Bad: I ordered the filet, but I was brought the salmon. I accepted this because we had waited well over an hour from ordering to receiving our food. I would’ve even been ok with this overall, but the salmon was overcooked. I also wanted to chalk this up to the kitchen being busy, but there were plenty of empty tables and not very many new patrons had entered after we sat down. After we had finished eating, we waited another 30 minutes for the check. Upon receiving the check, we noticed I was still charged for the filet. We brought this up to the server (who was also the manager) and explained that even though I had ordered the filet, I was brought the salmon and that I didn’t say anything because we had already waited over an hour for our meal to arrive. Instead of removing the filet from our bill, she added the salmon (kept the filet on the bill) and then gave us a 20% discount. The 20% discount took off LESS than the cost of the salmon. We were already frustrated at this point since we had been sitting for almost 2 and a half hours, so we just paid the bill and left.
Summary: This place has so much potential and POOR execution. Hopefully they can get it...
Read moreMy wife and I finally got around to trying out the Oxley House for our anniversary dinner. I'll sum it up as decent food for a premium price. We each had an entree and one beer, and we split a salad, and the total bill with tip came to $127. At that price I expect spectacular. It wasn't bad, but definitely not spectacular. We split the salad with the strawberries and walnuts, which was quite good, although I did notice one yucky looking strawberry slice. My wife had the crabcakes - too much bread in them, although they were not bad. I had the ribeye. It was a very good quality steak, not the tough grocery store meat you get at a lot of restaurants. The interior was a perfect medium rare, but there was no sear on the outside. It was barely browned with a couple of anemic looking grill marks. Kudos for using good meat and not overcooking it, but given the same piece of meat, I believe I could have done better on my grill at home. The loaded baked potatoes were good. The roasted vegetables were forgettable; not bad, but a bit rubbery and not much flavor. Our server was excellent. However the kitchen service was very slow, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Also, they need to do some work on the acoustics of the dining room. It was extremely loud even though there were very few people in it. Bottom line, they either need to up their game or cut their entree prices by $8-$10 and...
