The Canopy — Restaurant in Ellicott City

Called to check on hours, confirmed that they were open to 9:00 PM last order at 8:45 PM. Google web per Canopy 8:00 PM. Asked about availability for pit beef they confirmed they have plenty. Arrived after 6:00 PM and found out that only phone in orders. Called ask for 3 lbs of pit beef, not available there is a beef shortage, pit turkey and pit ham by the pound are available. Pit beef sandwiches only. Ordered four medium. Went home and opened sandwiches ,then weighed 7.8 ounces including roll. Reviewed receipt charged 1/2 BBQ Chix (4@ $7.25) Called to confirm that the the receipt was correct. Told that it was it is easier and faster to use that charge as the beef price went up due to shortage. They confirmed that they provide 4 ounces pit beef per sandwich. Kasier roll weighs 3.7 ounces. (that is $29.00 per pound for the beef). Not able to confirm what Canopy menu is as the store website is not available. On Restaurant J menu lists Canopy medium pit beef sandwich at $5.95. A 1/2 pound of pit beef is $6.50. So for comparison, I was charged and foolishly paid $29.00 per pound for pit beef. I searched the web and have not been able to confirm current beef shortage in Maryland. All that being written I DO NOT recommend The Canopy Barbecue Restaurant. Portion sizes are small, not able to confirm information on website and a dismissive attitude when I called to confirm my experience. I've smelled their meats cooking for years while I sat in the next-door Mickey D's drive-thru line. It always SMELLED good, but I never stopped in to try. Today I did and my only question is What took me so long????

Had the large Pit Beef with onions, horseradish, tiger sauce and I later added ketchup, plus an order of Onion Rings. The beef was perfectly cooked, thin-sliced, and has a super-tasty bark. SO moist and tender that every bite was a clean bite - no need to gnaw your way though this sandwich!! The Onion Rings were terrific, and I've heard their boardwalk-style fries are top-notch. I passed on them today, but won't make that mistake when I come back. Soon!

CAME BACK with my 20-yr old. Same sandwich X2 along with fries plus their KILLER Onion rings. And there was much rejoicing!

Back again with the wife a Bawlmer-girl who knows her Pit Beef. 4 star review. OH, and those ONION RINGS. My gawd!!!! So good.

Been here twice. Always heard good things as a kid so I finally remembered it and decided to go as an adult. Wanted pit beef with tiger sauce. Got horseradish both times, which I don't care for. So i thought maybe it was the default condiment. But even despite asking if that came standard the second time (it doesn't) and specifically saying "no thanks" ... there was even more the second time. The dude making the sandwiches speaks English, so I don't know what the deal is there.

And unless the horseradish completely overpowered the tiger sauce, I certainly couldn't tell there was any there. Either time. Also the second time, the meat was completely overcooked. But I still enjoyed it. Like it almost felt like they were messing with me. I'm a really easy-going customer, but they're at 0% getting basic things right. It's good the beef is so good, because otherwise I would never come back. Fries are delicious too, the staff was very friendly, and service was super fast, for whatever that's worth. I would rather wait a little longer to get the actual thing I paid for. Even if overall the food is still good. Pretty big...
