Where do I begin? Perhaps as a typical hapa, growing up in Hawaii, my view might be a tad jaded. The huli huli chicken, while technically living up to its name (its really just barbequed marinated chicken), there was no substance to it. It was bland. Marinated in Soy sauce (traditionally, its Teri sauce) and there was no added flavors. No sesame seeds, no chopped green onions... Nothing. The kalua pig? Not salty enough. The mac salad? Too much pepper. Way too much. Of course, that could just be a bad batch, it happens sometime. But there was no Teri sauce and I am not fully certain that the mayo was Best Foods (while TOTALLY inconsequential for me, it's considered the "authentic" Hawaiian mayo), and it lacked substance more than the overdoing of pepper. The girl behind the counter, bless her heart, was not even trained to say Hawaiian words right. When ordering the Ali'i (Ah-Lee-ee), she said "Ali" (like Muhammad Ali). The music was not even Hawaiian music. It was your standard pop song radio. Now, while yes that is popular over there, it needs a more reggae feel if you are going to go modern day. Personally, I would have liked to hear more traditional Hawaiian music, most notably the Brothers Cazimero. Service was fine though, and maybe I am just nit-picky because my grandfather was a chef and kitchen manager on Maui for years, but while everything was not bad, it did not feel authentically Hawaiian. It felt like another haole trying to capitalize on local kine, which is a tad...
Read moreLet me begin by saying the 3 stars is not due to the food. Food is good and prices are good. I will continue to go, but there are some changes I think that need to be made. One, put an overhead menu up behind the counter so people in line can see what they want to order. Having two laminated menu's on the counter is pretty unsanitary because every single person handles the menu and there is no time to clean it in between customers. Maybe they don't want to put up an overhead menu because they want to easily swap menu's or change prices, but that's a lazy excuse. You can put up a flat screen TV connected to a computer that is easily updated. The tables are often times dirty or not wiped down and I have visited several locations with varying results, some locations better than others. I also suggest putting fixed pumps in for sauces and cups on the side for to go orders. It's more sanitary since people aren't all handling the squeeze bottles and would be more efficient for the business because employees aren't spending time filling little cups and gathering squeeze bottles left at tables. Also, you don't have to ask people for the teriyaki sauce because they took it to their table. Otherwise, good food and good value. Staff have always been nice and friendly and seem happy to work there. Just needs a few basic tweaks to be a four or five star but can't honestly give...
Read moreTwo for food because my fiancés lettuce wasn’t fresh.. we didn’t want to be taking pictures while we were dining in but.. I get if kids are hired, but weird noises out loud is unprofessional. I’m also 19 and don’t act this way whatsoever. Ofc you’re aloud to have fun but not up to an unprofessional point. Seating area and dining area was dirty, there was no one there and enough employees not doing much.. this young girl that served us seemed mature but there was the rest of the employees that didn’t atleast try to be be adequate … for my food it was alright? Just mainly lots of rice which yes I ordered with white rice but it was more of that under the teriyaki chicken? Than the actual chicken. And I guess the flies being in the restaurant are just part of people opening the doors. I love Hawaiian time always go to the river road one. But I felt like a review for my experience had...
