How did this place get awarded the âBest of Eugeneâ? I donât get it. Your overall happiness with the food served here will depend on what your experiences are with Chinese food and what your personal tastes are. This was my first visit. I have been fortunate to have had some really amazing food in my life. If youâre a restaurant goer, I donât know if this food is going to satisfy a palette that seeks rich flavors that impress. Sadly, I think even Panda Express has more flavorful food. Thatâs not saying much.
We ordered potstickers to start. But they didnât come out until after we all had our entrĂŠes. The potstickers were supposed to be chicken and cabbage but they were really unseasoned giant chicken meatballs inside of a very thick wrapping. Cabbage? Barely. The dipping sauce was highly acidic and sour.
My daughter ordered a fresh vegetable fried rice. The rice was flavorful, had nice green vegetables. It didnât stick together. It was very good.
The egg drop soup was a broth of blandness. I put in some soy sauce and then it was just a soy sauce flavored soup. Nothing green in it. Little bits of something crunchy. The three of us all tried some and then let the waitress take it away.
The âpork fried riceâ served with my combination meal was gooey, pasty, and bland, with four or five little pieces of dried out pork in it. No peas or carrots, like you usually find. It was probably made in a big batch and let to sit in a rice cooker. Just my impression. It didnât taste fresh. I could taste old rice. My husband said it âtastes like wheatâ.
I also had pork chow mein on top of soft noodles. Have you ever had Chinese food that looks and tastes a lot like La Choy in a can? Thatâs what I experienced. The sauce was pretty much unsalted thin chicken stock with corn starch. Bean sprouts were fresh.
The sweet and sour pork was really good! Crispy, with a nice basic sauce. My husband had the pineapple chicken. It was basically sweet and sour chicken with some pineapple in it. It was also good, but he loves pineapple chicken and often the sauce is a yellowish pineapple sauce, so he was disappointed. So breaded deep fried meat with sweet-and-sour sauce, theyâre doing a great job.
I was getting upset at the meal. I didnât want to eat it. I ate my 4 pieces of pork. I was not going to say anything. Mainly because I read a review that said when somebody complained about their meal they were treated extremely rudely. But our server was very friendly so I took a chance. When when I asked her about the extremely sour potsticker sauce, she changed in demeanor. She said that âeverything here is made from scratch and youâre going to find things here that you wonât find at another restaurantâ. I was as polite as I could be when I let her know that regardless of the bland and unappealing flavor, it didnât taste fresh. She repeated her previous statement, and added âWell, were not gonna make everyone happyâ. No offer to remake or replace the poor food. No attempt to resolve the issue. And she didnât seem at all surprised at my displeasure. Tells you something about how often they may receive this same feedback. I left my entire plate of food and went outside while my husband and daughter finished. I was pretty disappointed and felt ripped off.
I wonât be returning, ever. Even for the food I enjoyed. Bad food, bad customer satisfaction efforts, bad review. What else can I say? Ive rarely had meals that Iâve looked at and thought, âI DO NOT want to eat thisâ. Give it a try if you like run of the mill Chinese offerings. But be wary. There are WAY better places to eat in Eugene. Give your money to a restaurant that cares what their customers have to say.
UPDATE: Itâs been five hours since weâve eaten. All three members of my family are having very bad gas and upset stomachs. This was the only meal in the past two days weâve all three eaten together, so I donât know if it was something else we ate. No accusations,...
Read moreWent here with my husband for the first time last week. We've been on the hunt for "Our Favorite Chinese Place" for years. I think we finally found it.
We started with the soup of the day; egg flower. This was the low point of the meal for me (and made me consider rating it only 4 stars). The soup had a nice thickness/texture to it, but the flavor was off. I couldn't place it exactly. It tasted almost burnt. Perhaps it was a fluke, or perhaps it's a more traditional, less Americanized flavor that I'm not familiar with. No matter, my husband ate mine after he finished his own.
The entrees came quickly after we ordered them, perhaps only 3-4 minutes. Broccoli beef and Ginger Chicken. The vegetables were fresh, colorful and cooked perfectly. I was impressed that more expensive vegetables, such as red bell peppers, were included on the plate. Both the beef and chicken were tender and free of any weird tendons and gristle that you commonly run into elsewhere.
I so look forward to returning here and tasting more of what this restaurant has to offer. Wonderful food and...
