Sad to say we did not have a good experience at this place. Food was ok, not horrible, not great. I've definitely had better latkes and chicken noodle soup at other delis. But the worst part was the service. Our waitress seemed hostile to us. My friend ordered mustard with his sandwich, she didn't bring it with the sandwich. So he reminded her. Instead of getting it for him right away, she took some orders at some tables. So he asked the hostess (who was very friendly - the only good thing about the restaurant) for the mustard. She got it for him right away. Then maybe five minutes later, the waitress came with the mustard. She saw that we had it already, so she seemed offended by that. And after that, she seemed to give us really bad service on purpose. We had been done with our meal for while, our plates were cleared, and we were clearly waiting for check; she walked by without glancing at us, and started talking to a neighboring table. Then walked away, again without glancing us. So we asked the hostess for the check, and she was about to get it for us, but I was fed up by then and didn't care about looking at it, - I just left the approximate amount in cash that we owed and walked out. Who knows if it was enough with the tax, but there definitely was not any tip. So we definitely won't be going back. Too bad - it would have been nice to have a Jewish deli to go to...
Read moreFinally got to try out my buddy's place Mensch's Deli in Evanston today, and it did NOT disappoint! From the moment we walked in, it smelled amazingly delicious! 😋 The atmosphere was great with lots of people having lunch in booths and at tables, we loved all the old photos that decorated the walls throughout the dining area. We were greeted, seated, and served with warmth and kindness! Such a wonderful menu with great selections of foods you would expect at such a deli! I asked the owner (and friend 😉) for his recommendations, and again they did not disappoint!! We ordered the recommend Latke, served with applesauce and sour cream. My wife ordered the BLT with extra crispy bacon 🥓 served on Challah bread with a variety of pickles on the side: dill, half sour, and a very tart but delicious pickled green tomato!! I ordered the recommended bowl of matzoh ball soup (YUM!!!) with a half Mensch's pastrami sandwich 🥪, with the homemade lemonade 🍋. Everything was great, and we can't wait to return to taste our way through the entire menu! Mahalo Jack and crew for a wonderful lunch date with my best friend and eternal...
Read moreA very loud, somewhat disorganized place. The wait can be up to 45 minutes. Probably due to the chaotic way they run the place. You finally get seated, then wait 10 minutes or so for a server. The folks filling water/coffee speak little to no English. Getting your order correct is sometimes a bit tough. Things like butter, jelly, or other condiments are missing at times. Northwestern students pack the joint and probably aren’t concerned about the quite high prices. I will say the quality is pretty good but with some serious misses. One is their attempt at cabbage soup. It’s “vegan” which should be an option as every decent recipe I’ve ever seen uses beef broth and this version is just not good. On the other hand, the Matzo ball soup is the best I’ve had. Service is just ok with a lot of “the kitchen is backed up” as the reason for delays. But with its proximity to NU, this place will never hurt for business. Good for them. They just need to tighten up a few things, make a few design changes (large, wasted counter space stumps me), and they will get 4...
