I recently had a horrific experience with Sleep number where I was tricked into 'testing' their glorified air mattress for sleeping/water bed for sitting, for the modicum fee of $500 ($250 for delivery and another $250 for pickup)
I was honestly discouraged to look for a new mattress since I had ecstatic about the Sleep number before it had been delivered because my ex had one and I remember it being magical but I must have been high when I slept on it ;) (I had loved my Simmons Beautyrest Classic for over a decade and it has been discontinued. And so has the bed after that :) I am Autistic and Autists don't like change, so it's been difficult to try to find a replacement for my dream mattress.)
I don't think I am the only person who feels like shopping for matresses is daunting. I want to invest in the best I can afford because I am not going to replace it in a decade, and I had foolishly paid sleep number to dispose of my old mattress. So now I had to find the right one and get it delivered while I still had theirs to sleep on. In my mind this was a logistics nightmare.
Last Thursday, I walked by the Evanston store after a Dr appointment at Northwestern and was only planning on testing the newer Simmons models if they had them, so pso that I could purchase one at Crate&Barrel since I have a design trade discount of 20%
From the outside the store looked like it was closed (the entrance is not very inviting) so I had to walk around the block and realized that someone was working when I peeked through the front window.
I was greeted by the friendly Nate who spent at least two hours with me, listening to my woes (about making a terrible impulsive purchase worst mistake of my life) new back aches and joint pains (that he pointed out were being caused by the sleep number, and not my recent March birthday) and he educated me about the different brands, features and benefits of coils vs memory foam, all while I laid/sat on multiple beds all around the showroom. I have Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and spend a lot of time sitting or lying in bed with crippling fatigue. Throughout this time I was considering only getting a quote from Nate and going home to think about this purchase for a week so I would not end up in the same place as I was last Thursday.
After attentively listening to all my needs, Nate figured out a way for me to stay within my budget by finding me a floor model of a Tempurpedic for side sleepers, and I ended up leaving with a delivery scheduled for Tuesday (5 days later) mainly because of his warm demeanor. I never felt like he was trying to close a sale but rather like Nate was helping me solve this problem that was causing so much anxiety because he obviously cares about people.
I ended up trying to get a later delivery on chat later that day and got bumped to Saturday instead (48 hrs after my purchase!) Nate called to follow up on my delivery within a day and I am happy to report my knee pain is gone and the sleep number raft is leaning against the wall. The delivery men suggested I throw it in the trash, and as much as I would like to, I need to get some money back :) they didn't know the background story but are equally wise.
I'm truly impressed with American mattress and Nate was a delight to work with. I have already recommended him to another sleep number...
Read moreWorked with Jack there, absolutely phenomenal experience. Started off by just checking out the store. His focus was clearly on making sure I was happy with my purchase rather than selling me the most expensive mattress. For example, there was one mattress that was significantly cheaper than another I expressed serious interest in, and he just said, "This is a great mattress, especially for the price. You really don't need to spend more than this to be happy if you like this firmness." However, I went there because they had an awesome promotion on the website, but any time there's a too-good-to-be-true promo on any business' website, you go into the business' physical store and they give you some rigmarole about this, that and the other thing and it feels like such a ripoff and hassle. Jack just said, "Oh, if that's on the website, then I can do that, no problem." Just really great experience. This was months ago, but I need to buy a mattress topper for a dorm bed, so I'm going to go again later today, so I was just remembering how great my...
Read moreHad a really horrible experience with American Mattress this morning. I purchased a bed that was comfortable in the store but has been very uncomfortable at home, to the point where I've had terrible back pain. In an attempt to rectify the situation, I exchanged for a different mattress and paid a delivery fee. They arrived at my house without the 30 minute notice they said I would receive and most importantly WOULDN'T EXCHANGE THE MATTRESS. On the way out with the mattress they didnt even exchange, they even knocked down my keyboard. I've literally paid for them to deliver NOTHING and walk with their dirty shoes on my carpet spreading mud everywhere. On the way out, one of the delivery drivers said I would receive a call from the store. At this point it's been more than an hour and I haven't received a call from American Mattress.
If you're considering shopping...
