Kanpai Sushi & Asian Bistro — Restaurant in Evansville

This delightful hole-in-the-wall restaurant is one that would very easily be missed if you weren't looking for it or noticed their perpetual Chuck Norris jokes on the sign in front ... and it truly would be your loss.

The food is generally Asian fusion and sushi. I realize that such descriptions often evoke eye rolling and assumptions that, as they can't decide on a single cuisine, they probably aren't doing any of them well. You'd often be right ... but at least in this case you'd be very, very wrong.

My family and I have frequented this restaurant for years and I can honestly say that the food is fantastic. You want to know HOW good they are? They serve Brussels Sprouts as an appetizer. Now, before your wretch at the memory of your parents force feeding you those little stinky miniature cabbages as a child and look for somewhere else to eat, please allow me to inform you that - somehow - they're not only palatable but FANTASTIC. Enough so that my wife and I will honestly go here just for the flash-fried Brussels Sprouts and sushi on a regular basis. If that's not a testimony, I don't know what is.

The service is generally quite good and responsive, but does slow down a bit in heavy service (as any restaurant will). The beer selection is quite good in bottle and marginal on tap, but - over all - quite enjoyable. They have an array of sake selections and a few decent bottles of wine, if you're so inclined.

It seems this place can't get it right with service. We have been here twice within a month period, last time was yesterday.

The good part, sushi is great & you will get your order correct. If you attempt to order of the menu then either order will come to you wrong or forget about your order for one person in group. Is it server or kitchen fault? I say both. Servers need to keep an eye on their customers & not have their gathering in front chit chatting! While kitchen might need their eyes examined. As for my main meal: I had stir fry combo (chicken & beef) large rice bowl with few bites of each chicken & beef & scallions as garnish, no taste whatsoever even after I put soy sauce on it. Wife had supposibly Ahi Tuna salad for $10 (after waiting 30 min they forget her order) she got few pieces of tuna on top of Romain lettuce, that's all folks. She would been better off ordering Two orders of Sushi Tuna & got more.

Would we be back, probably in few months to give it one last try before I say Strike 3,...

I am so disappointed. We used to LOVE this place. Date night, fun lunch date or just because we didn't feel like cooking. We went in today for a fun lunch date. We got our sushi way after we got our food. Our lunch wasn't anything resembling warm. The sushi was so large you couldn't fit it in your mouth. I eat sushi for the unique melded flavors, I don't want to butcher it. I want to pick it up and put it in my mouth to enjoy the combination. My vegetables were so soggy they looked like they had come out of a soup pot. I got one drink the whole time I was there and when I am paying 2.50 for a glass of soda I expect more than one glass. Our server never smiled and all but ignored us. I waited up front after he had taken my card for 10 minutes before he ever came out of the back. The young lady behind the counter never smiled, never said hello and never asked if I needed help. I guess it is Zukis for us from now on. At least they...
