What a delightful bakery! Lots of well crafted treats to explore here. I should mention up front that this is not a budget bakery. Some of the prices give mild sticker shock, but you absolutely get what you pay for. So if you want quality, you'd be hard pressed to find better in the area.
The cakes are positively sumptuous and each a work of art. If you want a cake to IMPRESS both in look and taste this is definitely where you should come. Their rainbow cake was perhaps the most beautiful piece of pastry I've ever seen!
I'm mostly a donut fan myself, so I'll focus on that. The stand outs for me are the raised donut staples: the humble Maple Bar, and Custard/Fruit filled. These pillowy yet firm creations are generous in portion and satisfyingly substantial. The texture/flavor ratios are perfection!
The maple glaze is creamy and rich without being overly sweet or cloying, seriously a best in class maple glaze! The custard is lightly sweet with a delightful eggy edge and a consistency that matches the raised dough density almost perfectly! The fruit fillings are tart and bright and in proper proportion. I seriously can't speak highly enough about these raised donuts!
The fritters are a close second; well flavored and just the right balance of external crunch and internal chew. I like their thickness as well, they're flatter and thinner than many, but this is a resounding positive as it makes the mouth experience consistent rather than a craggy puzzle. I've had the equal to this fritter elsewhere, but this definitely occupies the upper echelon of the fritter continuum.
If I have one note of mediocrity, it's the cake donuts. Don't get me wrong, they're dressed up to the nines in wonderful creativity, and are by no means bad, but the actual donuts themselves are just OK. Perhaps the elevated maple bars set the bar too high by comparison, but I found the cake donuts overly dense and crumbly. Still worth your dollars as whimsically exciting edible decorations at a party or other celebrations, but as a donut aficionado they lack the refinement of the other categories.
Overall, this is an A+ destination for your fancy / specialty bakery needs. I'm eager to try more of their fare such as the Coco pan, Cannoli, and Macarons. I'll definitely be back the next time I want a...
Read moreSo many fun treats! They have everything from cannoli, to donuts and cookies, some pastries, cake and cheesecake for sale (by the slice) and whole cakes for sale as well as made to order. I ordered a cake here in February, for my daughter's birthday and it was made just as according to our request. Although I'm not a cake person at all I REALLY liked this cake and were it not for my sugar and carb restrictions I would have easily eaten more than a measly bite and I was tempted to eat half of the cake, lol. Imyt was very light. My daughter, on the other hand, IS a cake person and wished that the cake had more sugar "punch" to it and basically more flavor overall. I would advise you try this cake in a slice to see if you want to order full size cake. Or get another flavor of cake if are looking to feed a crowd where you want a really sweet cake. Good customer service! There is street parking in front of this bakery and a couple tall stools paired with a small (look out onto the street) should you want to enjoy your treat right away ;)
Maybe this is really asking for a lot but I would have loved to order what I would say is one of the hotest trends in cakes!!!...Marble glaze! My daughter and I had to planned to make one but realized with all the work we were doing for her party that we'd rather buy a cake. I was a bit dissappointed that Despi doesn't make this cake. Maybe they would if I gave them more than a weeks notice? I am not sure. The response I got (which I appreciate!) was that they didnt have the needed supplies. I did encourage the cashier to let the owners know (again) how much I would have liked to buy one. I would have happily paid $55 for it rather than the cake I got for $30. NOTE TO DESPI: Seriously, Despi, if you would make these buy request (with maybe a two week requirement for order placement) you will attract even more...
Read moreThe desserts were a last minute resort. I never feel like they care about customers either. I had an issue here about a year ago involving poor customer service and didn’t want to come back in the first place. This morning, in a pinch for desserts for a non-profit event, I came in and made a Doughnut purchase of almost $60. I asked to use their restroom and they said it wasn’t open to the public. They instructed me to walk to the Starbucks down the street. I walked to Starbucks but the lobby was closed due to staffing shortages. I had to walk all the way back. Still needing to use the restroom, I rushed through the rest of my order. I asked for a box that you could see into for the event but they only have two sizes so my only open was to cram the desserts into a tiny box. The employee at the counter said, welll, I guess since Starbucks is closed I can let you use the bathroom if you reaallly need to. Of coarse I really need to! I just walked to Starbucks and back. If I didn’t really need desserts this morning I would have just walked out and never came back. At that point, I was so mad that I didn’t want step foot inside their bathroom I just wanted to get out as fast as I possibly could! My advice for this business is that your customers should be valued and should not ever be treated (or referred to as) the general public. If you are serving food, it’s also probably a good idea to at least have a space where people can wash their hands prior to consuming the food that you’re selling them. Gross and potential health code violation,...
