Hi got here not too many people here. I asked for a booth seat and was seated with a menu. Shortly after being seated I was given a glass of water. Okay good so far...two young ladies didn't introduce themselves asked me if more were coming I said no just me and I'm ready to order. I'm guessing they didn't hear me because they were more concerned removing the extra silverware. I asked the young lady furthest away can I place my order? She then pointed to the other young lady busy with the silverware that she would be taking my order and walked away. The other young lady came over and asked me if I was ready. I said yes and gave my order Lamb Dibi Afra with salad with a side of jollof rice and a side of fufu with the pineapple lime ice tea. She left to place my order and came back shortly with the ice tea (pretty good tea). 17 minutes for the food which I was surprised because authentic African food is cooked from scratch maybe I had different expectations. Everything was good but the lamb...it was mostly bone scarcely any meat on the many bones. Tasted good though but not much to enjoy. Also as I was only here 20 minutes it's probably not polite to ask how's the food and try to give me my check so soon. I mean no more than 5 people here. Is there a rush to get me out? Finally the jollof rice was timidly spicy but a bit on the oily side. I asked for a to go box as the rice side portion was rather large could probably feed 3 for a side and I put some of the boney lamb in there as well along with the fufu...I mean I'm paying for it I'm going to finish it!
Just to let you know I'm not one to rave about adequate food I more focus on the weak areas. But I will say I enjoyed the music and atmosphere. The seating area was clean and nicely decorated.
Don't be afraid to spice the food like it should be, I was expecting the food to be more spicy hot. Not all of us have sensitive pallets. Alas not so but I'm sure I will hear something about saying that.
Still waiting for check or do I have to pay up front, no one has come back to my table since I've asked for a to go container.
Okay, I guess I'm going to go upfront for my check.
Keep up the good work, work on the other areas will most definitely come again with the...

Four stars is an above average score, mostly earned due to the uniqueness and strong flavors of the food. I rated this restaurant in a category above a burger joint, but below a steak house. Three stars is what you would expect; not above average, but not poor.
We came to Heritage African Restaurant expecting a different dining experience, and we were not disappointed. The menu was full of unique and interesting dishes. They had a full bar, but we decided to stick with non-alcoholic drinks. I had a ginger pineapple juice, which was amazing. I would come back just for this. My partner had a Sene Gambian Long Island, which was also good. Each of these drinks cost $6.
We started off with Chicken Fataya, a pastie like dish. They come on a plate of three, and we got two chicken and one seafood. They were quite good, and came with a great dipping sauce.
For dinner, I ordered the Dibi Afra Suya, which is grilled lamb. It came with a side of rice, and both grilled and pickled onions. The lamb was bone-in, as I expected it would be. I do have to say, I prefer it boneless. The lamb had very good seasoning, but some of the pieces were tough. Both the grilled and pickled onions were flavorful and both tasted different. My partner got the Tilapia, which was a full fish with both a head and a tail. This made it a bit difficult to eat, and he thought that the meat near the skin was a bit fishy tasting. It came with a very good salsa-like bowl.
The total bill after tax but before tip came to $79.07. I will absolutely be coming back, but due to the price compared to the food quality I won't become a regular. I think it was fun for a unique experience and tasting new things. Plus, the ginger...
Read moreMy friend and I came to this restaurant for lunch, very excited to try something new. Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed. This is a new restaurant, so I don’t want to knock on them too hard, and absolutely support everyone coming and giving it a shot, and hopefully they can work out some of the kinks we experienced.
We got there at about 2pm, three hours after opening. I’m vegetarian and was drawn here due to the large selection of vegetarian labeled items on the menu. Upon trying to order though, I was informed that there was only two vegetarian options that were “ready” neither of which were what I was planning on ordering. I did pick one of the available dishes but that was a big blow right off the bat. My friend also tried to order the oxtail stew, and another item, both of which were “unavailable” at that time as well.
After about an hour our food came out, no big deal on the wait, but unfortunately neither of us liked our dishes that we received. The vegetarian peanutbutter stew that I received was just soup base, with two whole carrots and a plantain in it 😅 the rice was not vegetarian so I was unable to order it.
Ultimately, we were disappointed by not being able to order what we wanted off the menu, and were not thrilled about the dishes we received. We both left after a few bites. The staff was friendly and the...
