Today was my second time at Luigi’s, and I feel like I have a good enough grip on the business to write a review as a Google Local Guide on this one.
Both times, I came here for takeout, and both times were to feed a family of six. I was able to do so both times for about $60, which equates to about $10 a person; so not to bad.
Both times I ordered 2 pies and a separate entree. The first time it was barbecue wings, and this time it was cheesesteak and fries, because who in the tri-state area doesn’t like a good cheesesteak with their pizza?!
The pizza is delicious, I want to lead with that because this is primarily a pizza joint. I’m not a personal fan of their shredded style Italian sausage. For me it was just an awkward texture, and it drained the meat completely of flavor. The cheese, sauce, and dough are all above standard for your non-chain pizza. The pepperoni tastes great as well. My preference would be for the pepperoni to be cooked a bit longer, but don’t let that deter you.
Luigi’s only has bone-in wings, so if you’re looking for boneless, it will either have to be tenders (which they also have) or a different restaurant.
This brings me down to a bad experience today with my wife’s cheesesteak. She likes to have enough mayonnaise to still be there after the heat has been put to the sandwich. So, of course, I always order her steaks with extra extra extra mayo, and I always explain why so the kitchen can make adjustments. When I checked the food when leaving, I noticed the cheesesteak bread was completely Sahara dry. When I presented it to the front counter guy, he agreed that it wasn’t there and he took it to the kitchen to get corrected. When he returned, he informed me that the chef refused to add more mayo because he already added it, and he returned it with eight packets of mayo. Rather than continue arguing with the front guy about what the back guy wasn’t going to do, and since I had already waited 45 minutes for my food, I just took it. I have way too much going on in my day to fight a losing battle. So, as a guide, I’ll just take the hit, and set the expectation for you all that the cheesesteak was not only bland and dry, some assembly may be required. Not my cup of tea on a $60 bill, but you can make that decision...
Read moreI ordered a medium cheese pizza, 10 wings w/blue cheese dressing, and a slice of pizza (with pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom). I placed the order online, and I put an extra 15% tip in addition to the delivery charge. The order was placed at 5:22 and the estimated delivery time was 6:15-6:25. The actual delivery time was 6:40. I get it, times are tough right now. So, I didn’t call to complain about the time, nor did I complain to the driver. Again, I understand. No big deal.
My family was together, they were all eating the cheese pizza, waiting for me to start the movie. I’m now able to sit down and start this movie. I opened the box with my slice of pizza. I looked at the pizza and saw just pepperoni. It was a slice of pepperoni pizza. I must admit, I was upset. I double checked my receipt to make sure I ordered a slice of pizza with pepperoni, sausage and mushroom. It was on the receipt. I called Luigi’s to tell them the slice of pizza I ordered was incorrect. The gentleman that answered the phone told me that they got busy, and they’re still busy, but since it was just a slice of pizza, it would cost more for them to deliver the slice of pizza to me. So instead, he offered a $5 credit I can use for the next time I place an order through them. I'm thinking, "that’s not why I called; it wasn’t what I wanted; I wanted to try out the pizza I ordered". I even told him that I was new to the area, and I’m testing out different pizza places to see who has the best pizza in the area. Nope, that didn’t make a difference. He still said he couldn’t deliver the slice. So here I am, zero stars for the slice of pizza I didn’t order. Zero stars for customer service. After the conversation, I felt I wasn’t important enough to correct the mistake, because it wasn't cost effective to deliver...
Read moreI live down the street from Luigi's and have lunch there nearly every day... their pizza is THAT GOOD. There is typically a large selection of different pies available for slices and they're displayed for you as you come in -- you can see exactly what you're about to get before you order. My personal favorite pies are the pulled pork, chicken/bacon ranch, buffalo chicken, BBQ chicken, and ceasar salad (yes, it's a slice of pizza)... they have over a dozen other selections ready, on display, every time I go in.
A recent reviewer said their dough were premade.. this isn't true. On any day you can walk in and see the guys making the dough in the back. They make a bunch of dough, put it into containers for later, but that's not "pre-made" -- that's planning ahead. This place prides itself on fresh ingredients -- they grill up chicken breasts and slice it up for their pies -- they grow fresh basil outside near the outdoor seating!
The staff is pretty decent.. like I said, I go in there nearly everyday so I've gotten to know the folks there. Staff turnover is very low -- so whoever was speculating otherwise is wrong. The owner can be a little gruff sometime, but the rest of the guys are pretty friendly. When it gets busy the guys working there tend to get a little more focused, but I wouldn't misinterpret that as mean.
Prices are very fair -- I get two big slices every day (usually bbq chicken or pulled pork) and it's a little more than $5. They also accept level-up payments -- which I had never used, but I signed up for it (for free) after an employee suggested it... using level up there has saved me probably over $100 in the past year.. can't...
