Nestled in a postcard-perfect corner of Southport, chain coffeeshop G Café is the kind of place that's trying really hard to make your suburban dreams come true, and mostly succeeding! Picture this: a charming brick façade with enough white trim to make a colonial house jealous, complete with Pinterest-worthy pine arrangements that practically beg for an Instagram story. The staff? Let's just say the barista's personality was as warm as my matcha latte should have been (but sadly wasn't... more on that green disappointment in a moment). They're practically throwing free breakfast sandwich samples at you like it's Oprah's Favorite Things, and the cookies? It's a nice.
Now, about that matcha latte... imagine if someone whispered the word "green" to some hot water and called it a day. It was giving "shy tea" energy when I was hoping for "main character" vibes. But here's the thing, between the flirty-yet-informative counter service and them delightful treats, I'm willing to chalk up the tepid tea situation as a one-time faux pas. Four stars out of five, and I'll be back, just maybe for a different beverage next time. After all, any place that's this generous with their breakfast sandwich samples deserves a second...
Read moreIt’s a nice spot with a great assortment of baked goods and the staff are lovely.
That being said, I beg management to please figure out how to make better espresso and comment here when they do (I want to continue being a customer). The iced lattes always feel harsh, bitter, and often too intense caffeine-wise. Lattes should be smooth, flavorful in the right way, and not make you feel jittery after a few sips.
I’m no barista, but I’ve talked with enough to know that espresso machines need proper calibration and testing to produce the best result, and adjustments are often needed depending on things as subtle as the day’s humidity level. Perhaps it’s just a poor choice of beans they’re using, but I suspect the espresso shots are being pulled in a less than ideal way.
I wouldn’t complain if an iced latte at this spot weren’t so expensive, but I can’t really bring myself to blow 7-8 bucks (after tip) on a drink that disappoints me almost every time. The quality is just not there. Like honestly I’d prefer a Dunkin iced latte, and that’s generally my last choice. The good news here is this really should be an easy fix with a bit of consulting by someone who really knows...
Read moreBeen here a few times and each time I observed a huge disconnect between the quality of their food and their onsite service. The cakes, pies and muffins, etc. are really good and working with them to place a pre-order is pleasant and easy but the Southport location's on-site service is always a put off. They are polite but I always feel like they are disinterested to serve their customer. I once arrived 45 minutes before closing to pick up a large pre-order which was already prepared and was sitting on the counter. They made me wait 10 minutes while one counter person was chatting with another customer and the other one was cleaning up. It was really awkward to watch them ignore me. After they finally noticed me, I wanted to purchase an additional item and asked a few questions which they seemed irritated to answer. I made my choice and asked them to cut it in half but they said the kitchen was already closed and they couldn't do it. Really? I...
