I'm one of these people who loves going to classic New York restaurants more than whatever the hot foodie place of the moment is. (I also avoid "Restaurant Week".) If that makes me a stuffy old codger, so be it.
Anyway, I love the location of this place (very close to where I usually stay), the uniformed doormen, and the very wonderful staff. The restaurant is elegantly decorated - you feel like you've entered a vintage era. We went on a weeknight for a couples dinner. It wasn't very crowded at all.
Not sure which dishes have the small portions, as I had the beef stroganoff and it was large. I was barely able to finish, in fact I think I had to leave some. It was a bit heavy and more on the order of a good old ethnic restaurant than a cutting-edge Food Channel concept, but it was still pretty good.
Also had the tea which was served up very nicely. I was a bit bummed that they were out of my first wine selection, but the substitute bottle the server suggested...
