I normally would recommend this restaurant; however after last night’s experience, I am left pretty disappointed. The restaurant was pretty empty upon arrival (maybe one or two additional seats taken). I had ordered sushi (per my usual) and specifically stated, “NO Sesame, highly allergic”. Upon receiving our food, at first glance everything appeared fine and we began to eat. I had eaten two pieces of sushi at this point, when the third piece that I had gone to pick up caught my eye. I saw what ended up being a black sesame seed. I assumed that maybe one seed had straggled behind and I would just not eat that piece. However, as I went to look closely at the piece of sushi, I noticed that all of the sushi was covered in sesame seeds (they were majority white seeds so they were camouflaged perfectly in with the white rice). I knew at this point I would soon begin experiencing an allergic reaction and had no option but to take two doses of Benadryl in hopes to keep the reaction from escalating. My throat began feeling awkward and my chest was very heavy. I explained to the waitress that there was sesame on the sushi that I specifically explained I needed without sesame due to being allergic. She just took the plate from me and shortly returned with the same plate of sushi to ask me if I wanted to take it home (perhaps for someone I know). I was confused by this and more than likely did look at her awkwardly as I stated, no thanks, I’m trying to avoid going into complete anaphylaxis at the moment. She responds with, “oh ok, do you want water, maybe that will help.” Now, do not get me wrong, not everyone is allergy savvy but let’s be real, her responses to the situation were less than desirable. Now, I drove to the restaurant separately from my friend due to living in different directions of the restaurant. However, now that I took two doses of Benadryl; I was unable to drive because it causes me to become very groggy and ‘knocks’ me out for hours. My friend now had to call her husband to leave his obligations that he was in the midst of working on to drive to the restaurant in order for him to drive me in my car back to my house while my friend followed us there in her car. Then he had to get in her car and they had to drive back to the restaurant to pick up his vehicle for him to return to his obligations and her to head home and handle hers. I get life happens, but in the midst of us arranging the situation with my friend’s husband on the phone and myself deciding whether I feel the symptoms are worsening or not and if I should go to the hospital as a precautionary measure; I pull out my inhaler to take it to help with my slightly labored breathing; the waitress comes over and looks at the both of us appearing as if were bothering her (which we haven’t asked her for a single thing since I explained the situation, so I don’t even understand what the rude look was for) and she states, is this separate or together. I was focused on the situation; my friend responded and told her separate. Upon receiving the check, I got double charged for items that I returned with the original plate (worried about cross contamination of the seeds/oils) and did NOT request to be replaced and were NOT replaced. I am not looking for a free hand- out and usually don’t expect people to fully understand the severity of food allergies, especially those that don’t have any. However, I will say that I am very disappointed in the way in which the situation was handled overall, I don’t feel I should have been charged for the double items, and it certainly would have been nice to receive at least one apology or shown any level of concern from the manager or waitress herself for the situation but I received none of the above last night. As my friend’s husband came into the restaurant to help me get in the car (because I was quite groggy at this point), we exited the restaurant and the various workers near the exit just stated, “Thanks come again.” I’m sorry, but I do not think I will be coming back...

My review seems to have vanished. Let's try again: Shogun is a five-star restaurant, offering excellent sushi to a small college town at amazingly reasonable prices.

Now, details:

  1. Anybody posting that prices are high here is unfamiliar with cost ratios for sushi restaurants. One cannot get excellent sushi for less, anywhere. Period. If you want supermarket sushi, visit Food Lion.

  2. Although the sushi menu is restricted by demand (no surf clams, toro, or uni, for example), the quality of what is offered is exceptional. The seafood is impeccably fresh, the portions are remarkably generous, and the limited menu is perfectly prepared. As an aside, I discuss sourcing with the sushi chef...Shogun is working remarkably hard to acquire the finest raw ingredients for their menu.

  3. My wife often chooses the steak and lobster hibachi option. Again, the culinary work is excellent, and the portions are too generous.

  4. The service is great small-town friendly. I strongly suspect that I know sushi better than my servers, but they really, really try hard to make us feel happy on every visit. That's rather rare these days, and my wife and I appreciate the sincere effort to make our visit happy.

This isn't just a "five-star" review...I'm trying to describe that Shogun is a top one percent restaurant for its price range, and that for anybody appreciating Japanese cuisine, this is a place...

Been a farmville naive for over 40 years. I drive pass this place everyday coming home from work and I see it’s always busy always wanted to try it today after my workout I call my little sister cause I’m always working. I had a day off. Ask her was she hungry? I told her to meet me here. we get here. Staff is very friendly. Environment is real nice super low-key spot but the food I don’t see the hype at all. I’m 100% sure it’s warmed up in the microwave from the previous night. I will say prices are good but you get what you pay for so experience wise staff wise 10 out of 10 food I will give zero stars also we didn’t touch our food. It was no one in there it came out cold the waitress never once asked us what’s wrong because clearly you could see we pushed our plates to the side over all not a good experience just a waste of money and we’re...

My partner and I went to Shogun on a Wednesday evening for dinner around 5pm and we appeared to be the only ones there. We were seated right away and waited on in a timely manner. We got California Rolls and cheese wontons for appetizers and they were absolutely delicious! They provided soup and salad with the hibachi dinner as well. (There was plenty of food!) I got the shrimp and chicken and my partner got the chicken and steak with fried rice. The fried rice was a little bland, but the rest of the dinner was so good that it didn't matter. The service was excellent! We had Michael as our waiter and he was very kind, patient, and attentive. The place itself was beautiful and we very much enjoyed our experience. We will definitely be going again soon!!

Shogun may be me and my husband's top favorite restaurant in Farmville—excellent for a nice date night. Quiet, upscale atmosphere (don't be fooled by the exterior), excellent service, and delicious food. Some of the menu items are a bit pricey, but we like the yakisoba and hibachi options—you can get a lot of food for $13-18. They start you off with crunchy fried wonton chips and yum-yum sauce, and then bring tasty clear onion soup and green salad. Finally you get the entree with a side of rice. We always need a box to take home leftovers.

I have no idea about these prior negative posts. Maybe a disgruntled former employee? The 8 piece scallops were sea scallops, large and tasty. (Posted picture) The tempura shrimp was perfectly done. We also ordered the clear onion soup and two spicy crab rolls. All were on point. If you are looking for a Tappan grill steakhouse with onion volcanos, this it not that place. The restaurant is spotless from the clean tablecloths to the restrooms. This restaurant we will definitely visit again.
