My wife and I live in Houston and were in Phoenix for our nephew's wedding when we decided to take a couple days to go see some sites (Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater). After a couple hours in the car, we stopped to use a restroom at the Shell station on Kachina Blvd off I-17 near Flagstaff. We usually buy something if we make a restroom stop because it seems rude to us not to. My wife points out the Strawberry Rhubarb pie because she's always heard me talk of my mom's rhubarb pie but has never seen it. Rhubarb has never caught on in the southeast for some reason unknown to me. Anyway, I pooh-poohed the idea because, come on.....Gas station pie? I don't think so. I went to the restroom and when I returned she was at the counter paying for the pie. "The cashier says it's good" she chirped. Naturally, I was overjoyed about gas station pie (insert sarcasm here) so I didn't look at it, let alone touch it, until the next day. Bleary-eyed from the road trip and the weekend's festivities but still on Central time, I awoke early at The Lodge in Williams, AZ. Since it was too early to wake my wife, I grabbed a cup of coffee from the Circle-K down the street from our motel and returned. Trying to be a good sport, I sat down to the pie my bride had purchased the day prior. Timidly, I poked at the crust with the flimsiest of plastic forks. You know the kind, really short white fork that bends as you remove it from the plastic. As I poked I was expecting the tines of the under-engineered fork to strain, warp and bend as they were cajoled and flogged through the perfectly browned concrete facade that represented a crust. To my surprise, the crust yielded to the slightest pressure but didn't crumble into sandy bits. Hmmm, Nice! Fork was intact. Bite.......The crust was really good......Whoa! I mean REALLY GOOD! Must be something wrong with the filling I thought....too much strawberry, too little rhubarb, too much saucey stuff......something. Nothing. I mean NOTHING! Not too tart. Not too sweet. Perfectly balanced. Crust at the bottom was every bit as excellent as everything above it. This is not bad pie. This is not even "good" pie. This is Great pie. I've traveled extensively and eaten my share of pies. We really like Paula Dean's place in SC and every time I'm there I stand in line to bring a pie back for my wife. And while I'm no food critic, I will say this; Pie Guys pie stands alone at the pinnacle of pies as far as I'm concerned. Furthermore, consider this: Rhubarb, while being good, isn't my favorite pie. But THIS pie, this golden, flaky, perfectly filled pie from a gas station in Flagstaff is the best pie I've ever had, period. Paula's doesn't touch it, and that's saying something. And so I say to Paula: Sorry, dear, but you've been replaced at the pinnacle of Pie Peak. To the Pie Guys: Wish we lived closer, we'd happily put any kids you might have through medical school. To my wife: Please allow me to eat some humble pie for doubting your purchase. My only request is that the four and twenty blackbirds are baked by the Pie Guys! Lastly to anyone who passes through or lives in Flagstaff: If you wait a single day before trying one of these pies, you will want to have your head examined. DO NOT pass up a chance to try Pie...

Our group wanted to celebrate our GG adventure with a delicious dessert, it was decided that a pie sounded like the perfect treat ! Well, we googled restaurants that offered pies , etc. And we noticed that the pie guy's reviews seemed well beyond what the restaurant pie reviews were getting! So, we checked out the pie guy's website and were able to find out a local gas station (we texted the contact number & the pie guy graciously replied with the info ! Woohoooo!
