Screwed my order up. I think this chain is in trouble. I'm actually FROM Indiana.. the chain is based in Indianapolis Indiana, USA. This fast food hamburger chain is in trouble. A few years back they reinvented the menu and signature "steak burger". In a few words, Steak and Shake has LOST what once made them successful. I cannot see this chain surviving very long. The hamburger patties are so thin they're ridiculous. Two patties do not equal ONE in a normal restaurant, the crispyness is not gross, but there's NO MEAT! Steak-N-Shake has reduced the menu until nothing remains. One can no longer sit down at the counter bar and order a Hot off the Grill custom ordered and cooked steak burger or hamburger. They're trying to compete on price with McDonald's (who has a frozen not so good or fresh product), this will not occur. I see consolidation occurring in this restaurant sector. First to close will be Wendy's, although here in Florida Hardee's still lingers, yet I'm unsure how (reduce salt on burgers). With all LOW END (drive thru) nothing remains. A mea culpa on the several years ago menu and neat changeover to crud will be necessary.. certainly they must have shed considerable masses of great loyal customers like Hoosiers and Floridians eager for a custom thick and delicious hot off the Grill hamburger fans. A high end menu area, a medium menu area, improved meat Patty size and thickness and quality is necessary or this chain will exit competition.. Burger King and Wendy's struggle also. .. I truly hate to see this occur.. with the frozen and lousy quality burger at McDonald's these guys could survive.. Asleep at the WHEEL! From my own hometown and they can't get it right. Maybe fast casual Five Guys will survive (need cheese selection).. or Robbins.. If Steak-N-Shake wants fresh outside advice and help surviving.. please feel free to contact me anytime. Formerly an excellent chain now bordering...
Read more1 hour wait time after prime dinner hours with 3 small children.... Ridiculous!
We went to steak and shake after going to a winter festival, upon arriving a group of 40+ people was seated. I asked if the wait was long as we had small children. No worries they assured. One our later my drink order was wrong, cups were empty and not even a glance. Not even a second thought from a single employee. 4 people served the tables without a thought about us. I was patient but this was ridiculous! I asked for my check for my drinks the waitress went to tell the manager. Through the serving window you could see that bobble head Chihuahua shaking her head and finger saying no no they will pay. I could literally hear her from my table. They came back stating I had to pay to throw the food away. Nope! Not going to happen. The waitress returned to the manager.. I could hear her say oh I'll handle this. She approached the table and was shut down before she could open her mouth. Drink bill or call the cops your choice. I'll gladly call every news outlet and let them come watch you hold kids here to go hungry.
Listen I spent much of my money at this establishment in the past. When I worked nights it was my post while waiting for my next call. Now we visit weekly. Well we did, we won't be any longer.
The manager needs some training, perhaps cut her down to a fry cook since she wanted to be back there playing around when she should have been handling the floor and the flow of customers. And 40 people is excessive, I'm not saying shut them out but they need to be handled by one person. They know they are going to take time to get in and out.

Read moreMy husband and I stopped by Steak 'n Shake for a quick lunch date. We’ve always enjoyed the food, but unfortunately, the service at this location continues to be a major issue.
We planned to eat in our car since we've had poor experiences with the staff before. This visit wasn’t any better. The fries were just tossed carelessly into the bag, and they forgot the cup of cheese I paid for. When I went inside to ask for it, the employees were laughing, gave me attitude, and acted like I was an inconvenience.
I ordered a cotton candy shake with no cherry, but they also left off the whipped cream — which is supposed to be included unless you ask otherwise. When I asked for it, I was met with more attitude. That said, the shake itself was really good — definitely a highlight of the meal.
Sadly, this isn’t a one-time issue. On a previous visit with my family, they forgot one of our fries and insisted we hadn’t ordered it until I showed the receipt. Then they handed it to me with more attitude. I also asked for BBQ sauce for my burger and got ketchup instead.
The food itself is usually good — that’s the only reason we’ve continued giving them chances. But the customer service is consistently unprofessional and disrespectful. Honestly, it’s no surprise that this location is almost always empty. There are rarely more than one or two tables with customers every time we go, and with the way the staff treats people, it’s easy to see why.
Steak 'n Shake really needs to address the management and staffing at this location. Customers...
