I used to go here and really enjoyed it so I thought that I would go back and visit again. I went alone and when I walked in the girl asked me "How many?" I said "Uno." and she looked at me like I was crazy. I had to repeat myself. Anyway she shows me to a booth without asking me if I wanted a table or a booth. I don't care either way but every customer should always be asked just in case. When I sat down I noticed that the entire place had been redecorated it looked very nice. I was not brought chips and salsa as is customary in every other Mexican restaurant that I have ever been to in my entire life. I was beset upon by a different server before I had the chance to even glance at the menu. She asked me what I wanted to drink. I told her that I wanted a particular kind of Margarita. She said that they don't have frozen drinks which is not what I asked for. Regardless I picked a different Margarita which they did have. I specified that I wanted the rim to be salted. When I got the Margarita the rim had sugar on it not the salt as I had ordered. By the way the Margarita was frozen, something that she had just told me that they didn't have. She then asked me if I wanted chips and salsa and she told me how much it would cost. Again yes of course I want chips and salsa that is the least that I expect when I come into a Mexican restaurant. And to round it all off the food wasn't as good as it used to be, especially the salsa, But also everything else notably the beans and rice as well. As others have pointed out in their reviews it does seem that things cost too much but that's not one of the things that I really pay attention to unless it's extremely egregious. Overall and generally a bad experience bad food and I won't be going back. P.S. They say that they've been there since 1966 but from what I understand that's misleading. The Information that I was able to gather leads me to believe that yes the building has been there since 1966 and it has been called Ruiz since 1966 but that the ownership has changed (fairly) recently. The ownership change would explain the redecorations and the change in the quality of the food...
Read moreGentrified "Mexican" food. It was so bad, we couldn't finish even half our plates. It didn't look or taste right. The melted cheese on top of our burritos was literal slices of cheese half melted, not queso like you would expect. The waiter asked if we wanted chips and salsa and we said yes because every authentic Mexican restaurant brings it to the table for free. They charged 99 cents for the chips and salsa each. We were hoping they'd be good considering they've been around a long time but it looks like it was bought out by a corporation that wants to squeeze every penny out of the customers for subpar food. I'm genuinely mad I had to spend almost $40 on only two burrito plates (and chips + salsa) that we couldn't even stomach. We both felt sick for the next couple of days, my partner especially. Portions are small and there was beef(?) on the rice just by default, which wasn't mentioned on the menu and also tasted bad. The dining room is also small and somehow very loud. There was only 5 tables of people besides my table (just me and my boyfriend) and we still couldn't hear each other from across the table that well. The menu is only two pages and overpriced. You'd think you could get more than one kind of burrito at a Mexican restaurant. Even Taco Bell has more variety and is somehow more authentic than this place.
TLDR; Not authentic by any means. Overpriced for food that you won't finish because you'll feel sick...
Read moreI highly recommend the family owned and operated Ruiz Mexican Restaurant (since 1966) in Florissant, MO. It is a fun festive family friendly establishment that serves very good authentic Mexican food and margaritas. My family consistently enjoys dining experiences and the atmosphere at Ruiz. My husband's retirement celebration (60 guests) was held at Ruiz. The delicious buffet menu included beef empanadas, chicken enchiladas poblano, barbacoa burrito melts, corn, refried beans, rice, guacamole, pico, lettuce, mixed shredded cheeses and sour cream. A self-serve table bar was set up with buckets of beer & pitchers of margaritas along with salted and unsalted glasses. The owners allowed us to bring in a decorated cake, paper plates and plastic forks. We cut and served the cake ourselves. The two friendly and efficient servers assigned to our party filled/refilled orders for soft drinks, tea, coffee, water, chips and salsa. They cleared off the guest dining tables as needed and made sure the buffet food and the table bar were kept full. Many compliments from us and from our guests were given to the servers and the cooks for jobs well done. The owners/managers who oversaw our special event were polite and professional from the beginning to the end. The contractual upfront deposit was deducted from the final bill and we got 100% of our money's worth from the folks at Ruiz...
