We went for my birthday in June and decided on the room in the barn with its own deck and spa tub in bathroom. I booked over the phone and was told check in was 4pm but that we could arrive around 2.30 and the room might be ready. We did just that as we were paying a lot for one night and wanted to make the most of it. This is where things started to get a little weird... Upon arrival at 2.30 there was no one on the reception desk and despite the fact they were just feet away in a small room no one came out until I rang the bell. Not a great start. I was told the room would be ready in half an hour so I happily went to wait in the garden with my girlfriend. When I returned in half an hour I was told it would be another half an hour. I made no fuss as obviously official check in was at 4. So again we waited. My girlfriend at this point was wanting to get the party started so went back to reception a few mins later to inquire about getting some drinks from the bar. She experienced the same awkward wait at an unmanned reception and was eventually informed the bar wasn't open yet. She thanked them and walked down the stairs to hear the reception staff loudly complaining about us arriving early when they had told us 4 o'clock. Erm no you told us we could try coming at 2.30 that's why we arrived early, no other reason. The overall attitude and customer service experience was really poor. They could barely be bothered to assist us, provided misleading information and then complained about us for acting on that information! We ended up getting into our room at 3.30 as one of the ladies who could barely hide her disdain agreed it was in fact ready. This left a really bad taste in the mouth and we ruled out having dinner there because of it. That being said the house and grounds are beautiful and genuinely charming. The deck from our room was lovely and the room was also very nice albeit small and definitely over priced at $300 a night! Overall we thoroughly enjoyed my birthday escape. Sitting on the deck soaking up the sun the view and the cocktails was enchanting. The attitude of the staff however was awful. Finally was looking forward to the complimentary breakfast but this was very disappointing. Small portions and pretty bland. The hostess in the morning was very nice and welcoming. In conclusion quite a few negatives which is a shame given the place is really quite wonderful. They should aim to do...
Read moreMy first experience with the MacCallum house was after a weekend excursion I took and had booked a room at the Mendocino hotel. I was mortified. The room hadn't been updated in probably 25 years. To date it, the television was an old 19" model. The lamps and curtains were from 15-20 years ago. You could see where they had replaced the valances and not patched the holes. For nearly $400 a night, it was horrible. We sought out alternative accommodations and found that the barn on your property was open from the wonderfully helpful gentlemen - the upper left room. It was the exact opposite of what we had faced at the "hotel". Every need had been thought of - from silverware to towels, anything we could want was there. In fact, I hadn't though I needed another food plate until I needed it - and it was there. However...this time staying at the quote "luxury suites" I was sorely disappointed. We had no silverware or plates for the cheese and appetizers I had brought back - I had to use the brown paper bag I bought the wine in. When looking around at the room, I was shocked at the furniture...it was horribly dated and used. CLEARLY it was old and full of holes, scratches and dents. The room itself was wonderful, but where was the attention to detail I had noticed in the "on property" barn room? When my father in law went to extend his fold out bed from the couch, I was really appalled. More springs could not be felt on a mattress from 1920. This poor 70 year old man had to sleep on that "pull out couch". He didn't complain, but had I slept in it, I certainly would have!!!! I have lived in NYC and had the odd pull out occasion - there ARE good mattresses and couches you can buy. What we found in our room was NOT one of them. Furthermore, the "hot tub" that we thought would come with the room was cold when we tried it - 5 hours after the attendant said it would be ready. Overall, my opinion of the MacCallum house is mixed. It felt like you had JUST taken possession of that "luxury suites" property, but after asking the front desk clerk to find you've owned it for 11 years, I'm very disappointed in your care of your clients. However, when we stayed at the barn suite, it was one of northern California's best nights. I don't know how you can be so accommodating and attentive for one room, and so apologetic and...
Read moreWe spent two nights in the MacCallum house suites. These are located a car ride away from the main hotel, where you check in. There are two steep staircases to get to the front desk, which we climbed, with suitcases. When we got to the top the desk told us our rooms were not in that building. No one offered to help us with our luggage, despite the fact that there were staff around. When we finally got to our building, we found another two flights of stairs to get to our room. No staff present at the second building to assist with luggage. It would have been nice to know this when we made the reservation. |The room itself is very dated, with no air conditioning, which is a problem in the summer months. The bathroom is poorly designed and the tub had mold. The sink and the tub did not drain well and we wound up taking showers in ankle deep cold water. We asked the desk to send someone up to fix the drains and despite being told someone would come up, the situation was unchanged. When I called the front desk to ask again about this, no one answered, at 2:30 pm. So I gave up and am writing this review instead. Normally I would speak to a manager before writing a review. ||We had a good evening meal at the restaurant but breakfast was difficult. Breakfast is included in the room rate. When I asked for a cappuccino, I was told it wasn’t included in the breakfast. Not given an option to simply pay for it. I said I didn’t mind paying extra for it. When I asked for the oat milk cappuccino I had had the night before, I was told they had no oat or soy milk. When I said I had had an oat milk cappuccino the night before, the woman shrugged and then produced the desired coffee. My husband asked for orange juice and was told there was none, period. He later asked what someone else was drinking and she said grapefruit juice, which he then had to ask for. Allof this was aggravating and simply unnecessary. The same woman added a 30% gratuity onto the bill (for the cappuccino). Who needs this at a so-called luxury accommodation?||We will not return and I advise others to avoid this...
