Today my father and I celebrated Father’s Day the best way 2 fitness minded Vegans could. We started our day doing 4 miles on Fort Lauderdale beach paired with a 20 station calisthenics work out. Afterwards we made our way to The Hummus House for a VEGAN feast. The Hummus House is in the Victoria Park section of Fort Lauderdale. The parking is metered on street parking and can be pretty tricky. The restaurant itself is completely meat free and but has a few menu items that may contain dairy or egg, otherwise it is vegan. We had worked up quite the appetite so we ordered quite a few things. We started with the dip trio which consists of hummus, babaganush, matbucha & pita bread. Each one these dips were more incredible then the next, as you could taste the freshness on the plate. The babaganush was the stand out on this platter and we couldn’t get enough of it. We also ordered the falafel which came with a tahini sauce. The falafel also knows as the the original veggie burger, was crisp and well done. The third and final appetizer was the Crispy Cauliflower, which was just as described and not over fried at all, it’s so good, it’s hard not to order every time you come here. There is a green spicy Israeli sauce that I suggest adding for extra taste and flavor. For main courses my dad got the Eggplant bowl which consisted of hummus, roasted eggplant, parsley, tahini, olive oil and I got the Jerusalem bowl which had hummus, spicy ground “vegan beef”, "vegan chicken" shawarma, sautéed mushrooms and onions. Both dishes were so good and so fresh and there was nothing left of anything we ordered. We left satisfied would definitely come back again. They do not have filtered or tap water available, so my only suggestion is that then should as I do not like buying bottled water for many reasons. Aside from that, no complaints and 2 vegan...
Read moreTLDR: A solid Mediterranean restaurant with good vegetarian / vegan food, but is priced more like a full service restaurant rather than counter service.
Atmosphere: Clean and well decorated. There are no complaints other than it is a bit small and parking is not fun on that street.
Service: the cashier was kind and helpful. Once again, no complaints, but as many of you know, I reserve 5 star service for those who go above and beyond making a truly memorable experience.
Food: we wanted to try as much as possible. So we got the appetizer trio, lentil soup, falafel platter, and Jerusalem Mix Platter. While the falafel was probably the best we have had in South Florida and the babaghanoush was delightful, everything else just wasn't at the same level. The lentil soup was a bit underseasoned, just your plain lentil soup, no kick of pepper or something else. The hummus was solid, but a bit bitter to our taste. And the Jerusalem Mix faux meat proteins themselves were pretty good, but the seasoning felt one note. Lastly, at $20 / plate and for the wife and I we spent $75 without drinks for an app, soup, two plates, and a small dessert. For counter service / takeaway style of meal, it just seems a tad too high, even for South Florida. We have nearby full service restaurants that charge $17-18 / plate and are just as good or even better.
Don't get me wrong, it was all good and if I was in the neighborhood craving falafel, I would go again, but all the other flavors just weren't mind blowing enough for me to want to drive out of my way (past like 15 other Israeli...
Read moreWas told about this place by a good friend - he shared his food with me and highly recommended them. I went myself and loved their food, and told them about it, and told everyone else that I know. Then I went to get something to go and wanted pita bread - I was perfectly willing to pay whatever, and told them so. All of a sudden they stopped the transaction and said they were “out of pita bread”. I thought it was odd but was very disappointed. So I went back the next day, and they told me I could not have any pita bread unless I ordered an entire meal. Was even more disappointed the second time I was turned away, but after thinking about it (and reading these reviews), I realize that they just lied to me and were merely being greedy. I know when I tell my friend (who knows the owners) what they did he will be very disappointed as well. I will say that the pita bread is the best I’ve ever had anywhere (which is why I believed them when they said they were out of it yesterday, so imagine the shock when I realized that they lied about it for that extra money!), and their hummus is delicious. Baklava not impressive. I was looking forward to having this new find to frequent, but I’m sorry to say I will not go back here again - not that they will even care. Where I’m from, if people love an item that you make and it sells out, then you make more of it to sell more of it. Most people bake/cook from their heart and appreciate when...
