INCREDIBLE!
I'm not a connoisseur of East Coast style pizza, but I have been in New York and New Jersey a time or two, and Big Apple Pizza is as close as I've ever had in the Fort Wayne area. You know when you call a place for a pizza and ask for a certain style ("Queens"- Grandma) and get told "We ran out of sauce for that one about an hour ago" that it's gonna be good, and you also know that the sauce is prepared daily, not canned, bagged, or tubbed to the restaurant.
And the portions...
One slice will do. Two slices and you're popping buttons. Three slices will have you eating in an ambulance. And you want to keep eating. It's that good. So, if you want to have pizza for dinner I would recommend visiting the restaurant for a slice. Otherwise, if you're feeding a small army, or you like calling in sick to work for a few days (from overeating) then I would recommend one 18".
Then again, you could use one of those vacuum sealers and freeze a couple of these bad-boys for the Apocalypse. I am guessing that some Big Apple Pizza pies would be better than Frodo's lembas bread, just in case you are traveling to Mount Doom with a sacred ring or something.
Seriously, though. If you want some great pizza and you're tired of the Chicago clones and chains then check out Big Apple. These guys are doing it right.
Disclaimer #1: I have no affiliation with Big Apple Pizza in the slightest except that I might be an addict. I'm not going to tell you how much of an addict because when I have my future heart attack I don't want any lawyers coming after the BAP owners. It's not their fault. They don't advertise heart healthy pizza.
Disclaimer #2: If you are looking for "Chicago-style" pizza then this may not be your pizza place. You fold or roll this pizza because they don't do deep-dish, thick crust, extra crust, mega crust, the crustenator, or crust on crust. You know what they say about pizza with big crust? Yeah, that's right, it's Chicago-Style, and this isn't it. It's just my humble opinion that we mid-westerners should finally acknowledge that there are other positive attributes to pizza besides the crust.
Disclaimer #3: The crust on Big Apple pies is delicious. Imagine Jack Black just said that, "delicious," and you are getting close.
Del-ish-ous,...
Read moreOH... MY... WORD... NEW New York, in INDIANA! This pizza is AH-Mazing. You have to try it. We actually ordered 3 pizzas but the other 2 were ransacked before I could post photos. The crust was floppy and perfectly baked (like I expect good NYC pizza to be). The cheese was gooey and abundant! Their sauce... SO GOOD. They have a simple marinara sauce (which they will give you sides of for free!). But then they put the most vibrant Italian seasonings on it to make it a bold pizza sauce with not too much sweet and not too much spice. Just the right amount is applied to not make it mushy crust! The pepperoni was delicious but I want to just take a moment to highlight their sausage. It's SHAVED! Like gyro meat but Italian sausage! It has the perfect spice to it which adds depth to the pizza, complimenting their sauce. We added mushroom and onion to one side and green pepper to the other and it did not disappoint! Their sausage roll is a bit more of a calzone but still amazing with their shaved sausage inside and 2 sides of MARINARA (all the weirdo BBQ sauce people will have to stock your own to create your pizza perversion). We are THOROUGHLY satisfied with the quality, the friendliness and the price point and value for our money spent. We did call in our order (which I recommend, especially on the weekends) and was told an hour and 10 min wait. No buggy. We timed our arrival at 5 minutes till and only waited a short time while they finished framing their masterpieces with the giant pizza boxes made to fit their generously sized pizzas. Needless to say, our family...
Read moreOrdered a large Manhattan Cosmopolitan pizza and a half order of garlic knots to go through their website. Total was $22.00. Was told it would be ready in an hour. My wife went to pick up the pizza, upon arriving and asking about our order she was told that we didn't have a pizza in under that name. The man was very confused. I sent her screenshots of the order conformation, he looked at them and used our order number to find the order which was never made. He then gave us someone else's pizza, so, I'm sorry to that person. This is a fairly new place and very busy, so I understand them still having some issues getting a system down, but their 1 star reviews tend to be little issues like this that could be easily resolved with some more organization.
On to the pizza. The pizza was fantastic. The cheese was some of the best I've had, melted perfectly and with great flavor. The sauce is also extremely flavorful and doesn't cease to amaze. The curst left some to be desired, it didn't have the crunch that you expect a thin crust to have, the underside was barely done as there were no dark spots. I prefer a pizza that is a little toasted. The slices are cut very large, pizza tasted fresh and is well priced. 9.4/10, lacking only because of crust.
Bonus review: Garlic Knots. These were fantastic. Not only was the bread itself good, but the sauce was incredible, unlike any garlic sauce I've had, very fresh tasting.
I would definitely come back for here. Hopefully they can figure out their...
