The food was good. Comparatively speaking, perhaps the best! So, why one star? Let me start with the Starter. We ordered the Church Lady Deviled Eggs. The server did her best to sell them. They were deviled eggs, not unique in any way. Evidently, the owner is a fan of the old SNL skit because they were a joke.
The price in comparison to the portions was scandalous. I ordered the seafood mac and cheese (lobster and shrimp). It was a child-sized serving in a small bowl and the portion didn't even cover the bottom of the dish. This was $27! There was barely one layer of macaroni. Was it delicious? Yes. Best I've ever had? Yes! But I just couldn't believe the portion I received in comparison to the price. It was a really poor showing. I've eaten at some of the finest restaurants anywhere. I've heard of restaurants that charge ridiculous amounts for small portions. This was the first time I've actually experienced such.
My wife ordered the grilled trout. Also $27. My wife comes from a family of gourmet cooks. She said the trout was the best she's ever had. It was delicious! But, again, the portion was as if they cut a whole trout in half and then half again. It was two, thin planks served with the green beans, and nothing else. No bed of rice, no risotto, no potatoes, nothing. Two thin pieces of fish and green beans.
The service was not much better. When my disappointment with the deviled eggs and the portion size of the mac and cheese was obvious, she offered nothing, not even an acknowledgment. When I asked for the French Onion dip to go, the preparer put the chips and dip in the same dish. When I made it known, there was no offer from our server to separate them.
The furnishings were beautiful and the booths were particularly comfortable. But, the atmosphere was brighter and the music was louder one might expect from such a pretentious, high-caliber restaurant. A great place for an afterwork dinner? Sure. Date night? Find somewhere less well lit...
Read moreThis new kid on the block may have knocked it out of the park. We have been eagerly anticipating the opening of Walloon's as we are fans of Magnolia Ave. We were not disappointed.
First off, thank you for the free garage parking. That end of Magnolia can be kind of tough for that.
We started with the tuna crudo and the steak tartare. Both were very good, but I did question the use of cantaloupe in the crudo which I felt competed with the tuna a bit. Personal choice, I suppose. The steak tartare was minus the standard quail egg, but well prepared. Crispy calamari salad was a nice twist on an otherwise old favorite.
We shared the redfish and were glad we did so we could save room for dessert. Shared the bread pudding. Very nicely done. There are many more things on the menu that we would like to try. We felt the southern coastal influence in everything, but it was not front and forward, which was nice and showed some clever menu planning.
Small, but very serviceable wine list and nothing too stupidly priced. As for the "coldest Martini", go for it. Very well done and tasty.
Staff was pretty much on their game for a new place which was a refreshing surprise. Well done owners. Everyone from the front of house to the back was friendly and welcoming. We (as did many others) got a nice tour of the place. I wish Walloon's well and...
Read moreWe had a birthday celebration party of 8 this evening. Walked in place was busy but they had our table ready for us. We started with appetizers 1. Mother’s Deviled eggs. 5 or 6 $14 tasted good nothing off the hook but delicious just the same. 2. Redfish beignets. Very good! Don’t remember price. 3. Raw oysters on the half shell $ MP. (Market Price) Since we eat oysters at many places around town we just figured high $20’s worst case low $30’s. Boy did we figure wrong. To begin with the oysters were harvested way too soon. In 50 yrs eating oysters we ALL agreed they were the smallest any of us had ever seen. We even wondered aloud why the kitchen hadn’t let us know before they arrived or like other restaurants added at the least a few more to the dozen as is common sometimes. Nope not this place. When I politely inquired the price we were told $48. People that’s $51.96 for a dozen oysters that honestly didn’t amount to 3 decent ones most other places. At that we decided not to order dinner. We didn’t complain we told the waitress we were just eating appetizers there and dinner was scheduled at another restaurant. Paid our bill and left. Our bad for not asking the price but no one rips us off like that in any restaurant EVER! 3-4 oysters didn’t even cover my little finger in width. Folks you live...
