I live in East Tennessee, but I am Middle Tennessee born and bred. Bishop’s is one of the few places I can find the food I grew up with commercially available. When I am in my family home-place of Franklin, I make a point of coming here if I have time.
I knew the food had to be good before I ever tried it. Why? There were customers of all colors waiting patiently in line. I know that if food is appealing to black and brown folks, it cannot be substandard in flavor.
Today I got a vegetable plate with green beans, squash casserole, pinto beans, carrot soufflé, and a corn bread muffin. My husband had meatloaf, green beans and fried okra.
Both of us found the squash casserole and carrot soufflé to be outstanding! The first thing I tasted was the squash casserole, and it would have been my favorite if I hadn’t also gotten the carrot soufflé.
The squash casserole was perfectly seasoned, creamy, cheesy, with a little crunch. I would have been content to eat nothing else.
The soufflé was a close facsimile of a traditional “Grandmama sweet potato casserole,” with toasted marshmallows on top. Any time I can eat dessert that is also a vegetable, I feel like I am getting away with something!
The pinto beans were better prepared than most commercially available, and would probably have been perfect if I had some Texas Pete (my favorite hot sauce) to take it up a notch.
For my tastebuds, the green beans needed a LOT more seasoning and a little fat. The green beans were probably perfect for someone on a low salt low fat diet.
My husband reported the meat loaf enthusiastically “good!” His fried okra was “excellent!
If I ever get any of the desserts, I will write a review on them. The pies look like those at a church potluck dinner. If they taste as good, that will be worth a whole...
Read moreI’m a southerner through and through, so you know Soul Food is the way to my heart. First time coming here and I was not disappointed. I would for sure go back no questions asked. Great atmosphere not really big on the inside you kinda feel like you’re almost eating at your granny house. They do have outside dining as well if it’s packed inside. The service was great all the ladies had a smile on their face and ready to serve you. You want find any waiters or waitresses here, because they serve you cafeteria style. You come in grab a tray and tell the young lady what you like. Now let’s talk about what I ordered 🤤 Chicken fried chicken with gravy, macaroni and cheese, carrot casserole, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, and a slice of pecan pie for dessert. So the Chicken fried chicken was delicious and cooked perfectly. The white gravy they make for it was perfect in every way. The macaroni and cheese? Two words thick & gooey like it should always be. I thought I was having sweet potato casserole, but instead it was carrot casserole which I never had before. And now I can’t stop thinking about and have to figure out how to make it at home lol the only thing I didn’t like as much were the mashed potatoes. I like my mashed potatoes to be more on the thick side specially if I’m poring gravy on top. Now don’t get me wrong the mashed potatoes were good, but for me I like more of a thicker consistency over the creamy style. And as for the pecan pie it was pretty good nothing special about it. Overall I would rate my visit 8.5/10 I would definitely go back again. And I would recommend anyone to go check them out if...
Read moreI’ve had many friends recommend that I try this restaurant so I decided to give it a shot. Bishop’s is a cafeteria style restaurant which serves the food you order on your plate for you as you move down the line. The couple in front of me dined in and were served their food upon request. However, I ordered mine to-go and was told that my food would be brought out to me. I had to wait 10-15 mins before I received my food, so I’m not quite sure why I had to wait while others didn’t. Anyway, for the food, I ordered the chicken, carrot soufflé, green beans, and Mac and cheese. To begin, the Jalapeño cornbread was extremely dry. It crumbled as I ate it. The green beans tasted like they were out of a can. There wasn’t any noticeable seasoning in them as they tasted just like water. The Mac and cheese was nothing special as well. I’d like to compare their green beans and Mac and cheese to KFC, but worse. I’d rather eat KFC’s Mac and cheese and green beans over Bishop’s 7 days a week. I was pretty disappointed. However, their hot chicken had a great taste to it . It wasn’t too hot and had a sweet after taste to it. It was crispy as well and very juicy. The carrot soufflé was amazing. It was hands down the best carrot soufflé and comparable to sweet potato casserole, in which the carrots tasted better than any casserole I’ve had before. The place where Bishops really shines is in their pricing. They give you very large portions for cheap. If I had to base this review off chicken, carrot soufflé, and prices alone, it would be a 5/5. However, due to the unexplained wait, and bland sides I have...
