Plaza Mexico – A Detailed Account of Subtle Disrespect Toward a Black Couple Visited: Sunday
If I could leave zero stars, I would. This review is not about food — it’s about dignity, respect, and how my lady and I were treated the moment we walked through the door.
This past Sunday, I brought my woman to Plaza Mexico for a peaceful dinner. We came in calmly, dressed well, and carried ourselves with pride and quiet respect. But the atmosphere changed as soon as we arrived — not because of us, but because of how we were received.
The hostess, a young light-skinned Latina, gave us no greeting. No smile. No warmth. Just a dry glance and a walk to the table. No menus handed politely. No “Welcome.” Nothing. She barely acknowledged us as human beings.
We sat and noticed how she interacted with others — mostly non-Black patrons. Suddenly she was smiling, making eye contact, even joking with them. The contrast was loud. She had full customer service for them, but stone-faced silence for us.
When our appetizer came, she didn’t say a word. Just dropped it off like we didn’t exist.
Let me say this: Black couples feel this energy all the time — but that doesn’t mean we’ll stay silent about it. My lady turned to me and said, “Did you notice that?” And I had. Because when we stood up and left, that same hostess — instead of thanking us or showing decency — rolled her eyes. A final act of disrespect to seal the deal.
We did nothing to deserve that. We came in peaceful. We came in ready to spend money. But what we got was coldness, dismissal, and open contempt.
To Plaza Mexico: you may serve food, but if you cannot serve basic respect, your doors don’t deserve our presence. Retrain your staff. Because when we walk in as a Black man and woman — united and strong — we expect the same dignity given to anyone else.
And to that hostess: your job is to serve people. If you can’t do that without prejudice, then you’re in the wrong line of work.
Peace if you mean it. But best believe — we recognize disrespect even when it’s served with silence and a side of...
Read moreDue to its location I expected this place to be great. The impression my family and I got when we were seated at a booth, did they just move in and open? This place just looks half put together, like they were in a rush to set up and open. I tried to look past that and hoped the food would make up for that. My kids ordered burritos, my husband the steak fajitas and I thought I'd splurge a little on carne asada. Both the fajitas and my carne asada was smothered in orange grease which I can only imagine is from whatever coloring the condiments (sazon) had that they put on it. Not at all how fajitas or carne asada are made. Additionally, the fajitas was mostly onions and peppers and what I would best describe as crumbled steak mixed in. Yes, crumbled like you would feta cheese on a salad or something. Super disappointing especially because for something so basic they messed that up, wouldn't have mattered if we ordered something else. I had two bites of my carne asada and left it. The only decent thing on my plate was the rice and beans. The burritos were OK according to my kids and the fajitas were not good, but the husband just accepted it as to not let it go completely to waste. The waiter didn't even ask when I asked him to take my plate, if there was a problem with it. He just took it. Which leads me to believe this might be a common thing, probably doesn't matter what my reason would have been, he's probably heard them all. It was an expensive mistake...
Read moreTried this place on a whim (truth and beauty was closed, without giving any notice on website!) and glad we did. The inside is a little dark, but lots of windows looking out to the creek. A nice spot. Music was playing, but different music coming from the kitchen too and it was really loud. A little awkward. Server was quiet but nice.
Start you off with salsa and chips - really good and if you want more they’ll give it free. We ended up with so much chips to take home. Salsa was nice, mild, lots of tomatoes juice but it still stuck on the chip. Some heat to it after you have a few. Our table got one chicken fajita and one steak fajita. Both come with tortillas, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes, beans and rice. Guacamole was especially good. Both fajitas came with plenty of vegetables which were cooked nicely. Everything had proper marks, and came out super hot and sizzling. It has mild, fresh taste without too many spices. It was really easy to eat as there were a million different harsh flavors. Delish! Glad we were...
