Rating Lazy Fish is really a hard thing for me to do. The atmosphere is great and the menu is playful and innovative. This isn't your run-of-the-mill sushi place with everything drowning in spicy mayo. After looking at the menu, the designer cocktails and the creative specials (and pricing), I expected to be impressed.
I have been to this restaurant three times now and each time, sadly, I am not as impressed as I should be. I think my issue is with the quality of the waitstaff. I say this because tonight I gave this trendy downtown sushi joint one last try. And like the last two times I left feeling like I didn't have the best experience. Here's what transpired:
We ordered a selection of fun appetizers and cocktails: the mondu (dumplings), calamari and salmon carpaccio. My friends beer arrived on time but I was left to wait for my hot sake. Our first appetizer arrived...the salmon. I waited because I still didn't have my sake and I was hoping we could pick and share at our multiple appetizers whilst sipping on our cocktails. This never happened.
After about 15 minutes we decided to eat our salmon dish. A few minutes later our mondu arrived. Still no sake but the waiter never stopped to ask how things were. He simply placed the next appetizer on the table and wandered off.
We waited a bit but he never showed up to ask how everything was or if we needed anything. Another 15 minutes passed and he showed up with the calamari. At this point our experience is already 2/3 over and I don't have my cocktail. I ask again for my sake but switch the order from a large sake to small since we are pretty much done eating. He plays it off like this is no big deal and says oops I forgot it in the microwave. Eeeek. This is upscale sushi restaurant. At least sincerely apologize!
My hot sake arrives last. He could have asked my friend if he wanted another beer at this point but misses the mark again. We ended up eating individual appetizers in small, sad courses and for me with no cocktail. Calamari was fine. Mondu was fine. Salmon Carpaccio was too oily and I don't think it was sesame oil on it so it tasted like it was supposed to be salad but only oil was drizzled over it. I might not have noticed this if I had my sake from the start but I was deprived of this early on.
The waiter arrives at last to FINALLY ask if we need anything now that the meal is over. This would have been helpful early on or even mid-meal. We ask for our check and in my eyes this is a fail. This is now my third and last visit to this 'upscale' sushi joint. The service isn't worth what I paid for the food and my experience kinda sucked.
Still looking for a good sushi joint in Frederick that doesn't smother everything in spicy mayo but takes care of their customers. Please let me know if...
Read moreThe food was fine. Tasty, good quality, good variety. The atmosphere was excessively noisy; one of those restaurants where people have to shout to be heard across the table, which creates a vicious cycle of even higher decibel levels.
The real problem -- and I reason I and my friends will not return -- was the rudeness and overall unpleasant demeanor of our waiter. He was discourteously brusk from the outset. He never introduced himself. He appeared reluctant to answer basic questions about the menu options. He served the mains before we had completed our soup and appetizer. He did not check on our satisfaction with the setups, service, or food at any point.
When our party was enjoying the last of food, he placed the check folder down on the table without a word. Some minutes later, he came by and picked up the folder, not at first noticing I had not put a card in it. I explained politely that we were continuing to enjoy our dinnertime conversation. This was after all of 45 minutes at the table.
After I went to the rest room, I returned and paid After that, we were apparently not moving quickly enough for his taste, as he stood over one of my friends and said, in a nasty tone, "we have a line."
Given his conduct, I gave him a smaller than usual tip. I wish in retrospect I had given no tip at all. I understand the incentive of a busy restaurant to turn over tables, but if I am paying $90 at a nice downtown restaurant -- rather than, let's say, grabbing a burger at McDonalds -- I do not expect to be given a bum's rush to leave my table before a hour has elapsed. Management need to train waitstaff to do better, and to realize that they are working at a...
Read moreAmazing food and warm service! We came in around 6pm on their busy Saturday night without reservation and was seated quickly after only 20-30 minutes waiting. We got to seat at the bar upon our request since we would like a private seat with a view watching the chefs preparing rolls in front of us. We ordered a TakoYaki that were incredibly delicious (definitely a must try if you're a salmon lover), a sweet and smooth Grilled Eel Avocado roll (especially if you're a huge fan of grill eel), and a Salmon Bentox Box (that came with a signature california roll, the teriyaki salmon which were so tender and delicious, miso soup were tasty, the vegetables tempura were so crunchy and savory). We also ordered BangKok Midnight and Blue Dragon for drinks and they were both aesthetic and smooth! We had such a perfect dinner date there and would definitely come back for more rolls and desserts next time!
A special note to the manager/owner that night who was taking care of us and so considerate when he brought out an extra bowl of miso soup instead of 1 given in the bento box because there were 2 of us - A gesture I don't normally see in other western restaurants when there are a group at the table who ordered something to share. Such small but kind gesture goes such a long way and set such a nice example for other staff at...
