TL;DR: This place was literally some of the best Mexican Quizine I've eaten in months, and matched my needs and desires EXACTLY! However... Careful of your sleeves. The grease game on these guys is real!
🥳 The seating is tight and sociable! 😈 The food is habitually bigger than expected, and always a great challenge! 🐄 The meat is fresh as hell!! 🙇 The staff are friendly, and constantly move amongst the eaters cleaning the tables and talking to regulars!! (GREAT PEOPLE) 😋 The food is soaked in gallons of grease! (GOOD, NOT A JOKE, I LIKE THIS A LOT)
ALL IN ALL, TOP LOCATION IN THE AREA! HEAVILY RECCOMENDED!
I ordered a quesadilla, expecting a small snack like some other places. What I GOT was a MASSIVE, GREASY, CHEESY, and LUXURY-MODEL-HEARTBURN-INDUCING FEAST! The thing was so greasy that when I picked it up the juices drizzled down my fingers and stained my sleeves. AMAZING! 🥰 EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED AT THAT MOMENT!
About five other hungry cyclists and I rode into town and one of us spotted Don Pepe's and said it was the best place he'd eaten at in a long time last time he'd visited. The bike parking was GREAT! Right by the entrance and hidden enough that casual thieves wouldn't spot it from the street. The staff seemed very accepting of our hot-day biking aromas and undesirable mugs, and they fed us like kings.
My friend got tacos, expecting two like street vendors, but got FOUR jam-packed good ones fresh from the grill!
If you want lots of room, peace and quiet, no heartburn, and want to wear long-sleeved expencive white collared shirts, this place might change your mind... but the grease might soil your shirt. Personally I think it's worth it.
The pricing wasn't half bad either in my opinion.
Go there it's good!!
If this review helped you out or at least made you smile, give it a like! Thanks!
To management: You are doing alllll the right things. Never change! A band of hapless cyclists heading downtown from the river thanks you! (And one of them at least will go out of his way to return many times!) Thanks...
Read moreDuring my few semesters at Fresno City College in 1993-4, my future wife and I would go to the original Don Pepe location on Blackstone. Not sure, but I think they were pretty new back then. years ago when this location opened up I was ecstatic since I no longer spend as much time near their other location(s) and the food is exactly the same regardless of the location.
If you are looking for a burrito or tacos, I would go somewhere else. you want to be focusing on the fish tacos, shrimp tostadas, tortas, and other dinner plates. If you want to keep it on the less costly side, go with a regular quesadilla- beans, cheese, guacamole- then load up on the condiments. if I get one regular bean, cheese, guac quesadilla + onions, cilantro, red tomato salsa, and hot sauce will last me two take out session meals, but I rarely resist a fish taco or my fav shrimp tostada
I don't know what it is, but their camerones are big and tasty with the perfect citrus absorption from drizzled lime ... now i'm hungry... in my top 5 choices for Mexican - on the casual side (wearing your pajamas in for a togo order, especially at the FSU location, is...
Read moreFirst off I don’t like leaving bad reviews and hurt any local businesses for no good reason. But the food here is ridiculously bland! I mean literally no flavor whatsoever. I genuinely felt like I was eating cardboard. The tacos come plain with meat and beans. I paid $2 extra for asada that wasn’t even real asada. Even adding all the toppings it still tasted bland. The asada wasn’t grilled or seared. You can tell it was boiled and had a weird artificial smoked flavor to it like what they add to beef jerky. It was fatty, chewy and rubbery. The burrito was just as bland even the rice had no flavor. The nachos were just as disappointing as well. This place is a joke, I don’t even know why this place has the rating it does. This is not real Mexican food, doesn’t even come close! No pride or love put into their food. There is sooooo many better spots in Fresno that won’t disappoint or leave you feeling disappointed/unsatisfied. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place and find a real Mexican restaurant or taco truck. You’ll be glad you did,...
