I had a lovely date night here recently. We ordered the clam chowder, the steamed mussels, the Chef's Board, a side of fries with the malt vinegar aioli, and a berry crips for dessert. The mussels were excellent. The sauce was delicious, they were didn't scrimp on quantity, and they were perfectly cooked. I also liked the crostini they were served with. The chef's board was delicious too, and quite large. My one critique would be that there were only two cheese selections and two meat selections. I would've also liked the inclusion of a honey or something sweet to accompany the cheese. Having said all that, it was delicious and included a good variety of fruit, mustard, and candied pecans. They also did something I love, which is they included a bunch of crostini to go with everything, most places don't provide enough bread and I really appreciated the inclusion. The fries were perfect, and the malt vinegar aioli was very good. The cup of chowder was great. We just drove up from San Diego and stopped everywhere to try a cup of chowder (this is chowder quest 2023). Out of the 15 or so cups we've had so far I'd place this one in the top third of contenders. The mixed berry crisp was pretty good. I thought it was a little heavy on the crisp and little light on berries. It was tasty, I'd probably say like 3/5 stars. Next time I'd maybe just get an ice cream cone while walking back to our room. The real star or the show was the view. We were there during golden hour and it was an absolute joy watching the light change as the sun set over Friday Harbor. Watching the ferries come and go was also great. The hostesses were all super friendly and helpful, as were the servers. They provide heaters for every table, and blankets too. Thoughtful touches for sunset dinners. Overall a great experience. Usually I find restaurants in these locations are overpriced and live off of their locations, but Downriggers breaks that mold.

The views at this place do not disappoint. The best part about the airy, glass- encased dining room is the ready availability of a fantastic view regardless of where you sit. The patio is beautiful as well, but make sure it isn't too cool before sitting down as the island can get chilly and windy fast. We came here for lunch and dinner. The food overall is solid, and tastes fresh. Definitely ask about the specials as they rotate interesting dishes in and out daily. We ordered Dungeoness crab tots and bread with sun-dried tomato butter for apps. The butter was surprisingly tasty and satisfying in the brisk weather. The tots on the other hand, were underseasoned and full of filler potato. There was negligible crab flavor. The pan seared salmon was dish of the day and cooked to perfection. Halibut was equally good - you won't go wrong with fish here. Prawn mac and cheese is delicious as well, but personally I would pick one of the fish entrees over it. The fish and chips is serviceable, crispy and with a generous helping of fries. For dessert, we tried the candy bar cake and white chocolate cheesecake. The former had a little 'refrigerator flavor' clinging to the cream, but was otherwise moist and went quick. The cheesecake is solid but nothing special. As for the service, the waitstaff seemed pretty inexperienced, frequently swapping with each other and spilling water on the table, but they were pleasant for the most part. Downriggers is a great pick for a special occasion and for some great views. They have just managed to justify their price point.

I would give this place a 3.5, but since I can’t, i thought I’d be generous and give it a 4. Let me first give credit where it’s due and say that the hostess at the entrance was actually great. The view is beautiful. That said, the food was just okay. I thought it’d be pretty hard to get fish and chips wrong. Wrong. The fish and chips, while it looked incredible, and I mean incredible, it lacked the flavor. I needed the sauce with almost every bite for it to taste like anything. The tots were okay, but not great. I kinda wish I ordered something else to see if it would have been better. The tomato butter thing that came with the bread was good - I liked it. The bread was okay, but nothing to write home about. The waiter was .. inconsistent? I literally heard him share the specials on every table around me, but didn’t bother mention them to me. I thought it was maybe because I looked like I knew what I wanted, but they, too, said we’re ready to order (which indicates they already know what they want) and he still shared the specials. He was fine otherwise. Again, nothing to write home about. The busboys, on the other hand, were awesome.
