When I have a craving for Mediterranean food, but don't want to pay crazy sit-down restaurant prices, I know Nick the Greek won't disappoint.
The Food: I've tried at least two dishes from each category of food (wrap, plate, bowl, salad, etc.), and I have yet to be disappointed. My most commonly ordered dish is the Beef/Lamb Gyro, a classic Greek food that has everything you need in a meal (e.g. protein, veggies, and healthy carbs) -- plus, it's quite good. It's stuffed with fries, but I always take them out and score myself a "free side."
However, I have found that the chicken in the chicken dishes (whether gyro, Souvlaki plate, etc.) is a tad dry. Still has good seasoning, but not as moist as I hoped.
The Service: The employees here are all very polite, kind, and friendly. Excellent training all around.
The Setting: It's located in a small strip-mall beside a Chipotle, Panda Express, and Verizon store not far from Cal State Fullerton. That means during peak season when school is in session or when the university is hosting a big tournament, the parking lot gets packed. It's made even worse because the stalls in the back are very narrow. Of course, this is not Nick the Greek's fault, but something to be aware of when you arrive.
Also note that the restaurant itself is kinda narrow with limited seating. If you're with a big party or arrive at noon during peak school season, you might have a problem finding a seat. Fortunately, there are some outdoor seating at the nearby Chipotle, so you could always hop over there.
The Reward Points System: I do have a complaint. If you join their club, you can rack up reward points that can be redeemed later for free items. When I first started coming here, they used a different system that would consistently not work. Now, they've switched, but it's not app based; it's phone number based. So there's no way for me to truly check my points to see if it's accurate. Sometimes I enter my phone number when I order but I don't get a text message confirming my points. Kind of frustrating, especially since I'm a loyal customer.
The Conclusion: If you're looking for a place that can balance the speed and convenience of a fast-food joint with the wide offerings and authentic tastes of a sit-down restaurant, Nick the Greek can be ideal. As long as you're not expecting a 3-star Michelin restaurant, it should satisfy your...
Read moreThe gal in the front is wonderful but my experience this time as far as the food and atmosphere is concerned was the opposite. Cooks are super loud and blasting music out of what I am guess are their personal speakers that was competing with the music being played from the restaurant speakers.
The gyro salad was not good at all. The beef lamb did not taste as good as usually tastes and the salad was nothing but Arugula and spinach drenched in some kind of bitter salad dressing. Too much dressing.
I will say my experiences the last two times here were completely different and. Food was good and I do not remember cooks talking and laughing so loudly. Plus they were definitely not playing thier own music the last time I was here.
Suggestions:
I was convinced by the other glowing review from a local guide. I was really looking forward to something special. These portions were skimpy I don't know who thought these were adequate size. They have french fries inside their gyros--Skimpy on the meat and heavy on the fries/filler. Wacky pop music ruins the atmosphere. Invest in xm or a better soundtrack please. The pitas were like mini soggy coasters. The tzatziki was outstanding. The garlic French fries are cold shoe string fries. The lamb gyro meat was outstanding and the chicken was outstanding also is cooked to perfection. The rice is definitely a winner! I spend 50 bucks and got two little plates. I go to the Greek restaurants where they're big steak fries and the portions are huge so Nick's place was such a disappointment overall It's very tiny, six big tables long booth and an outside dining area too. I got the yogurt dessert but it was drowned and honey. Because of the Starbucks the parking here is cramped. I definitely...
