Recently opened in February 2018, La Cocina De Abuela is a new star, in the City of Gainesville. It offers locals an authentic Cuban cuisine experience, cafeteria style. They offer generous portions for lunch at the price of $10 per plate with a drink.
Ambiance: Located at the corner of NW 23rd Ave and NW 2nd St, the restaurant presents a vibrant and relaxed, atmosphere. Their parking lot is shared with the other businesses in the plaza so during lunch, it can get filled up fast.
Service: Abuelas is mainly a family and friends ran establishment, the staff offers a warm and welcoming demeanor, greeting customers as they come in. Service usually starts with the customers lining up at the counter picking out what they want from the steam tables or ordering their Cuban sandwiches. Food is given at the same time upon ordering unless its something that they have to put together. During rush our if you order something that not already on the steam tables, it might take a while, but its worth the wait.

The mojo pork was pretty tasteless. The rice was dried out from sitting under the heat lamp and the black beans were pretty bland. They were delicious but so large we each could eat only half. Our soft drinks / iced tea were self serve. I want to come back for a lunch portion ($14) or a dinner portion ($16) of their cafeteria style, plated meal options. The place was busy with workers - policemen, GRU, DOT, etc. It all smelled heavenly. I asked several diners about their meals and the pork and potatoes seemed to be today's winner. However, everyone liked what they were eating and seemed to be return customers. Parking is easy and there is plenty of seating, both indoor and out.
